I believe that some of those sad lyrics are ones where he is expressing his true emotions while others are to draw sympathy from listners of his music. It is unfortunate that none of his relationships have staying power.

I believe that sadly, Prince doesn't have the self-confidence to find true love/his soul mate. He has a very limited set of parameters from which he chooses his catches. He continues to pull fish from that pond and his catches can't go the distance.

His soul mate is out there. She just does not look like him or his catch of the day: Vanity, Carmen, Bria, Mayte, on and on and on.

If he gets his self-confidence together, he'll find his lasting love.

I wish him well in this regard.

It also becomes a habit and I don't know anyone who's single that is lonely.
