Prince & his Princesses Just read a side note that "Empty Room" was probably written after a rough patch with Susannah. Which of Prince's women do you think inspired and received the best music from him during or after their relationship? Susannah. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Mayte! Hello? Emancipation was basically dedicated to her. I could read you poetry and then we could make a story of our own.

Jill Jones & Susan both got great tracks but never seemed to cause any dramatic music from Prince.
Mayte did get Emancipation and the happy tracks were good but the breakup gave us better material in my eyes. After hearing the versions of Empty Room that he worked out then Susannah gets my vote. Also he gave her "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Screams of Passion". Oddly Vanity got okay tracks to work with. Hot tracks but not really personal or dramatic other than 3 x 2 = 6. Yeah...so?
Let's chalk up Susannah's tally, shall we? The Beautiful Ones Empty Room Adore Crucial Forever In My Life If I Was Your Girlfriend The Screams of Passion Splash Girl Condition of the Heart Life Can Be So Nice Starfish and Coffee I don't have all of the jackets in front of me, but I suspect Susannah was mentioned somewhere in the credits/thank yous on Purple Rain, Around the World In a Day, Parade, Sign 'o' the Times and Lovesexy. (I know the last two, for sure.) Susannah was an integral part of Prince's music during his most prolific, productive, and popular years. Period. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
