Another lonely Christmas. Prince at his zenith.

In my humble opinion princes most underrated most overlooked song. Mr p rarely sings it live It is never played during the holiday season and it is rarely discussed by prince addicts. Besides ofcourse purple rain alc strikes such an ernest sincere chord that it is that rare song that you never tire of. The extended version is a gem if you can find it as well.

It's a nice song, but a tad melodramatic. This was appropriate as a b-side. Not bad, but nowhere near his best.

Yep. Gotta be the long version though! Although I can see why he edited out the slightly odd verse...

Do U still like banana daiquiris
boy we used 2 get so touched
U use 2 get so horny
U'd make me leave the lights on
I'd pay money just 2 C
your happy dancin silouette upon the pier
Sometimes I think I hear U smilin
Sometimes I think your here
I find myself holding every pillow
In the bed U and I used 2 share
Last night I spent another lonely Christmas
Darling U shouldn't B
U shouldn't B there, cuz U C

Got me to thinking about how good at editing he was back then, most of the PR album is edited from longer versions, and if you didn't know any better you can't hear the edits. I know as fans we would prefer him not to edit songs, but it's obvious that purple rain wouldn't have been so popular if it had long meandering songs. the general public like short concise 3/4 minute pop songs (Purple Rain apart, even though that was edied down from 14minutes).
It seems his choice of editing (or not) has deteriated over the years, songs that need editing; most of Emancipation (Right Back, Slave etc), against songs that needed more breathing room most of Musicology (Dear Mr. Man, Million Days, Man In Ur Life etc).

I can't listen to Christmas songs outside of the holiday season. I think it's a decent song, but I usually skip it. There are much better b-sides to devour.

17 Days
Horny Toad
Erotic City
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore
She's Always In My Hair
Girl
La La La He He Hee
Escape
SEX

Granted I'm not a non stop orger but I get out plenty douche. I've been to 7 or 8 prince shows including a couple of intimate concerts when he lived in Toronto and have never heard it live. While it is true it is a bit dramatic it is also true that it is no doubt heartfelt and the vocals are terrific. The current prince would be awesome if he had 20% of the vibe in that song.Never heard it on radio either which doesn't make sense.

Heard it on the radio plenty when it came out. Still hear it around Xmas every so often on a classic r&b station. It's not exactly the type of song to put people in the Xmas spirit, so I'm surprised it gets played at all.

One of my absolute faves, made only better by knowing it's Prince on the drums, too.

It absolutely must be the full-length version, though - the single edit is not welcome in my home. cool

I play it on the radio at Christmas time on my 80's show on the local college station.

It's always been a favorite of mine.

What do you mean never played?

since 1984 till 2008 it's played a few days before, a few times during Christmas Day and a few days afterward on one of the more popular RnB stations here

I love this song, the energy emotion the story/songwriting is just powerful and it was played 1nce or 2wice on the PR tour

Even though it's title Another Lonely Christmas, it's not about Christmas, it could easily be title something else and still be a fantastic song/story
the song writing at that purple zenith was truly off the chain

You believed all those songs to be true stories or some variation of some

No man, all 2freaky4church was saying was that on this site, this song has been discussed MANY times on here. I've seen P MANY times live, all before 1986 and as another orger mentioned, P has played this song live a few times on the PR tour. I myself have written a few threads about the song and how great I think it is. Not everybody digs the song but what song is there that everybody digs? Plenty on here, for what I've always seen, do like the song. At least the orgers that's been on here for more than a few years. Out here in So Cali, on Christmas Eve of 84, 1580 KDAY, which used to be one of the country's leading black stations, played this song. But yeah, I agree that this song is killin'. I've stated several times that P's musicianship on this (He's playing everything including the drums) is top notch. His guitar leads are especially nice. On the 12', there is a section that is very similar to the 12' of God Love Theme from Purple Rain (Another track that employs P playing everything) Very similar phrasing on his lead guitar as it is towards the end of Another Lonely. It's no coincidence that both songs have a very similar feel being that they were recorded so close to each other. God Love Theme was recorded on Feb 7, 84 and Another Lonely was cut on Feb 16, 84

Extremely well put however it does reemphasize my point that while he played it on the pr tour p has pretty much ignored it since. My first prince concert was the 88 lovesexy tour. But I did catch in a blues bar in what's called the yorkville district of Toronto in December and was disapointed that he didn't play it. Did not know the song was such a one man show. Good info

I have always loved this song, and have recently been listening to it. I actually love the melodramtic sound of it and the build. I really miss the discovery of the B-sides.

I was so excited to hear about the stripped down band and vocal focus P was bringing to Montreaux- this was one of the songs I thought would be great for him to play with the band he had there. I would love to see him tour w/ a stripped down, piano and vocal focused tour! Guess that was ONA tour (from what I gather from the talk on this site), but that was the one tour I had to miss- time in my life when was trying to have babies, build home, etc. so I didnt get to see it. I think P should play more piano!

The Christmas part is irrelevant, it could be any holiday- it is the loss of a loved one during a time of family/friends gathering, on a memorable day that is the focus of the song. The day itself is not the thing- but the loss and the memory of that person that comes about every year around a certain time (could be Valentines, a graduation date, an anniversary, whatever) it is the loss that is the focus.

I think "Snowman" would've done well as a b-side Christmas song.
