My pick is ATWIAD. When I talk to most people and they find out I am a Prince fan they always say, " I loved his old stuff. He was cool then..". The line in the sand usually starts with ATWIAD. Its the beginning of the end for the black R&B rooted listeners in my opinion. There were songs here and there that people picked up on later but, it was never the same. Even my Dad, who is one of the reasons I am a Prince fan, started buying only singles after Parade.

One of my best friends in HS was a HUGE fan up to and including Purple Rain. He was a moderate fan of ATWIAD and its b-sides, but lost interest at Parade completely. I don't even think he owned SOTT, which is a shame.

A lot of the people who followed him coming up wanted him to be the new Hendrix, a rock virtuoso who happened to look really cool.

I agree. They expected all funk/ rock all the time and were dissapointed when they had to stretch themselves and their tastes a little to continue bein a fan.

I remember in ATWIAD came out black radio(here) and the black fans of PR Prince were rocking Raspberry Beret, America, Girl, the Ladder, She's Always In My Hair & Hello these were very popular songs where I come from

I always find it interesting when the whole black/funk question come around for this album, those same people who supposedly question or are shaky about it were hardcore fans of Purple Rain a more rock oriented album

That's funny! She's Always In My Hair receives a few, " Oh, yeah... That one was cool.." responses when I bring it up but, they sometimes act pretty stank about Raspberry Beret. I agree that there is a double standard with Purple Rain. Good point!

Thumparello

When he released Planet Earth. That was weakest and lowest point of his entire recording career. One of the worse lps I've ever heard from him or any artist.

After his comeback with Musicology and having made a half way decent lp 3121 he drops the public with this.

Then gave it away for free so millions could hear it.

Good point. I know that people who were not huge Prince fans went out and bought PE after being blown away by his performance at the Super Bowl. A guy I worked with who loved the SB half-time show came into my office and tried to give me his copy of Planet Earth. He was aghast at the abysmal music on it. The look on his face told the whole story. I could only tell him "No thanks. I have a copy."
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

the obvious answer to this in the US is "Lovesexy". The album tanked here, and generated no interest. If he had put out some kind of double sided good and bad record with Black Album and Lovesexy and then put out the tracks that didn't make it onto a 10 track album out as b-sides... and put Pink Cashmere in there too... maybe...

But what happened to Black Album was great in itself.

I really dont see much a difference between PE, Musicology and 3121. NPS, Rave are comparable so I dont see how is the "worst LP evah"...In many ways its actually is the most "princy" he's sounded in a while.

In any event, the by the time PE came around Prince had already self selected himself into really being a touring act and the new releases are just a marketing gimmick for the shows. Musicology probably hurt much more in the sense that people were expecting a "comeback" and got some really crap tunes amongst some so-so to good songs..

The right answers to this thread continue to be, IMHO, LoveSexy and O{+>

Damn - that says a lot when a Prince fan won't even accept a free original copy, even just for backup. eek

I had friends who asked me about the Superbowl performance too. First and foremost, they wanted All Along The Watchtower/The Best Of U - I told them I'd let them know, but I doubt it would be on there. And to this day, hasn't been officially released.

If he would've followed the Superbowl up with LotusFlow3r/MPLSound? cool

and sadly it's STILL the case with his fans as u'll hear almost daily "his 80's work was the best", "when will he do a full fledged rock album", "what's this jazz shit?"
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Now... I do understand that some people just like what they like and that's it. I guess that's fine if that's all you want from life. It's their loss. I appreciate Prince as an artist and being a fan has helped me discover things that I didn't know I could have a taste for. At other times, it confirmed my definition of crap. lol

True - these are the days of MP3 players and Lossless digital backups . . . no need to have 2 physical copies of Planet Earth around LOL. Once it's ripped, the CD itself probably won't be seen again - ever!
