It's certainly plausible.....Michael always saw Prince as his rival in some ways whereas Prince never gave a fuck and just did what he wanted to do. What I find so strange is that he died on the 25th anniversary of Purple Rain. that's the first thing that occured to me when it finally occured to me to see what was occuring on this very forum a couple days later

I posted about this in another thread....Usually I find some of the more extreme pissing contest between Prince and MJ fans silly as all hell...
To me, the debate only gets interesting when you get an inside view such as the Rolling Stone cover story on MJ.... It's really interesting to see how competitive Mike was with Prince til' the very end....At one point in the piece, Kenny Ortega, MJ's director for what was to be the This Is It shows, asked Mike why he had trouble sleeping during the run up to the gigs... Clip from article: "For the most part, nights seemed to be the biggest problem for Jackson--he had complained of insomnia. But it was also the time when he felt a higher power was channeling creativity to him. "I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night," he would tell Ortega."I was up working on music. That's when the information is coming, and when it's coming you gotta work." "Michael," Ortega joked with him, "why can't you make a pact with your higher power so that you could put these ideas on the shelf until after July 13?" "No," Jackson responded. Then he might give them to Prince." MJ was competitive to the very end...But it also shows how much respect he had for Prince... [Edited 7/25/09 0:58am]

I don't know if any of you read the interview with the Director of the Montreux Jazz Festival (its in french.. but i can't remember the paper... maybe Le Matin).
He mentioned that Prince had reheared 3 different MJ songs in Montreux and he thought they were going to play them but Prince surprised him and didn't. He mentioned it in the context of Prince being completely unpredictable. Change it one more time..

I like to kid about MJ- and still will, the guy was a nutball rolled in crazy- but I don't think P ever wanted to fan any flames with him. That's not Prince's way when it comes to other artists. [Edited 7/25/09 0:58am] Just read this article today and was surprised to see it confirmed that the competitive rivalry continued, at least with MJ. The article notes MJ's feelings of rivalry began in '87 when Prince refused to do the duet on "Bad". He then specifically wanted to do 31 shows at the O2 to outdo Prince by doing 10 more shows than him, but by the time he confirmed the shows, he announced he wanted to do 50 instead. All I can say is wow. The article also points out that he'd been living in Vegas for the past few years. Didn't he meet with Prince in '06 while he was doing the 3121 shows to discuss business ideas? Good article, but it became very speculative toward the end.

ColAngus said: for all of us NOT used to him being mentioned ...
i found it funny today - as they were talking about M J and the 02 shows - the guy covering the MJ investigation mentioned that MJ was obsessed with beating Prince - they showed a quick snippet - as they were saying Prince sold out 21 nights and MJ had sold out 50 ... they then mentioned some of the odd requests MJ had - apparently he wanted to be in the Guiness book of records after the 50 dates ... What difference did it make that he sold out 50 when he wasn't physically or mentally able to do it. Something told me he wasn't gonna be able to do no 50 shows I was even doubting the 10 shows they first announced, but sadly I didn't think things would end like they had. Plus it defeated the whole purpose when you were doing to shows not for the love of it, but to get out of debt.Nobody could've told me 25 years ago that things would've ended the way the have now. Anyway. RIP MJ.

Michael was a legend and I have been a fan of his for a long time. The problem I had was that Michael always talked about numbers. It was mentioned that he wasn't happy with Off The Wall because he wanted it to sell more. I wish he would have put out more product though. For Prince, I think that after Purple Rain he felt he didn't need to prove anything else. So Prince tried new things.I always admired that.Hit or Miss he kept it moving. They are both legends. Love God and I shall 4ever Love u
