If you have the HIStory album, just look at the booklet. The entire thing is a "Michael Jackson is the greatest, highest selling, best loved, best everything artist of all-time." It bothered me to read that "booklet" back in 95, and it bothers me today. I wouldn't doubt MJ being obsessed with beating Prince, but the 10 shows vs. 50 shows could suggest otherwise. Militant said: As soon as he died, my cousin said to me, "I wonder if he felt like he had to try and outdo Prince, being as he thought of himself as the King".....
It's certainly plausible.....Michael always saw Prince as his rival in some ways whereas Prince never gave a fuck and just did what he wanted to do. I couldn't agree more. I think MJ chose the King of Pop moniker for the indirect reference to and in spite of Prince/royalty. They had one thing in common: MJ was competing with Prince...and Prince was competing with Prince. Not only that, but performing LIVE with real singing, guitar, and piano. Reports had him described as "in top form". Prince broke records with 21 nights, so it was really up to MJ to try to beam him. Did MJ win? He never performed even one show, had cancellations already (while he was still alive) and all that money has to be refunded. Add to that the fact that it would've been a mostly lipsynced show ... Advantage Prince. Seriously, people want to say things like "advantage Prince" when the other guy in question just dropped dead? Y'all need to quit up in here! lol A little friendly "keeping up with the Jones'" never hurt nobody (well, under usual circumstances, I mean). I think it's cute or sweet that after all these years, MJ was still keeping his eye on Prince. Just like old times. Who knows, he may have communicated as much with Prince, ya know? I mean, in a friendly competition sort of way. Either way I doubt Prince is happy to see MJ go out and especially the way he went out. "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."

I heard Mike would dig thru Prince's dirty undies, put them over his head and take a long deep breath. "Mmmmm Tito, now I need a tissue". "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

Prince has made references to Mike on Musicology, so what?, i believe old rivals never die but this "thing" wasnt disrespectful. The nastiest Part of the Prince vs. Mike rivalry is what the fans of both artist will stoop to. I've been guilty of it, but i was a fucking kid, now i'm grown and realize that i love mike too.Theres no reason to take parting shots while the man is 6ft. under, thats some coward assed shit, let him rest in peace. I'm of the belief that my boy was a flat out better artist, but i feel that way about prince in comparision to anybody. If there is a vault of new Mike material coming soon i'll be the first in line, and i'll still maintain my purple credentials ya feel me.

Thanks for explaining it. I'd been running on a treadmill with my mp3 player blasting when I saw his clip from "Fury" (I think) interspersed with the MJ coverage.
It was funny, seeing me fumble to take my headphones jack out of the player and into the TV port in time. But, alas, I didn't. But I didn't stop running!

I'd bet money on that fact that Michael would only have done the O2 shows on the condition that he sold out more nights than Prince. No question.

They did the same storyline on Entertainment Tonight about MJ being obsessed with beating Prince. They showed a clip of P in concert. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

This isn't surprising. He's tried to change his appearance to look like Prince for years. Hell, he even named not one, but two sons, Prince. Andy is a four letter word.

OMG! This story has legs and is starting to spread! Anderson Cooper just did a segment on 360 with a woman who reported this and other details about MJ's last days in a new Rolling Stone article. Just WOW!! Speculating about this is one thing, but actually seeing it reported on CNN is surreal. "Be glad for what you had baby, what you've got..."

it was just mentioned again ... on anderson cooper ... the rivalry etc ... On CNN - they said michael initially wanted to do 31 shows - which grew to 50 - but apparently there is going to be more in Rolling Stone i would guess because the person doin the talking was from Rolling Stone and was talking about the rivalry and MJ's demands (large estate in England to live on during the O2 shows and also the Guiness Book of World Records to be there on the night of the 50th show .... Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.
