I doubt Prince knows about any of these for the simple fact he won't let people sample his music unless it's used in a positive sense. Bow Wow talking about putting it down and them drug dealers with a studio doing Pure Cocaine definitely isn't in a positive sense. He didn't like the When Doves Cry remake by Ginuwine because when Ginuwine asked him what he thought of it he told Ginuwine it wasn't necessary.

Geez why is it every time something dealing with copyrights and Prince come up... everyone just propagates a lot of mis-information.

There is a difference between using a sample vs. doing a cover.

A. If someone samples a song by Prince.. they need permission of whomever owns the master recordings. That is his actual voice and or music used.

B. If someone does a straight cover... they DO NOT need permission. All they have to do is pay the appropriate fees so that royalty payments and such can be met.

C. If some one does a cover but alters the lyrics or the music significantly... they must get permission from whom ever owns the copyrights to the song... ie Warner or Prince.

D. If they cover or sample in a live performance... as long as the venue has payed all of its performance fees... no permission is needed. As long as its not recorded and later distributed in any form... including video Prince can't say anything.


This is just the a simple break down and does not include all situations. Prince usually have issues legally with with 'A' and 'D' situations. He may not like 'B'... but can't legally do anything but bitch about it.
