WAIT, folks, what's going on here? I mean, Prince is first and foremost an extraordinary POP-star, so far, so good.
And I agree, he's rocking as well.
But while you're talking about RnB (?), Rap (??), Jazz (???) and Country (?????) - DAMN, he's mostly a FUNK musician!
WTF?! eek

I've always thought of funk as a subset of R&B.

Prince has rarely done a good rap record... Dead On it and Face Down Come pretty close. I have never understood why his delivery wasn't better. He with a few exceptions just couldn't spit

At his height he was so extraordinary at so many different types of music it was staggering. Not only to fans that had embraced him but musicians. Prince is the musicians musician

Take the beautiful SHOE.... its an incredibly breath taking jazz record... just stunning. One day Prince is going to release an even Jazz record. There is hope because LotusFlow3r (not the other 2 discs) is IMO one his best albums in the last 20 years and 1st (real) attempt at an even rock type record since PR.

His R&B has tailed off significantly but at his height and even now on the rare of occasion he still has it (he will always have it live). Songs like Kiss, Girls & Boys, Erotic City & Love Bizarre are extraordinary examples of this.

Rock - what person that enjoys guitar doesn't like when Prince picks it up and plays. It seems that in the last decade he has really made an attempt to solidify part of his legacy as an extraordinary guitar player. Its too bad that Prince didn't spend more time putting together cohesive guitar based music on the same albums. Hey its his journey but the truth is people that like that kind of music don't even know P is that good and part of that is his fault and the kind of albums hes put out there.

Jazz - Those Mad House efforts are so underestimated and it appears that he is ready to move in that direction again. I'm waiting

Prince has done so many different genres and well its truly breath taking

Pop - again at his height just extraordinary. LRC, 1999, IWD4U, even on LotusF - $. Do you know if Andre 3000 came out with $ today how huge of a hit that would be

Oh and of course his alternative music... All the Critics, No More Candy... there are simply too many

The slow jams... the rock anthems Free and PR and the bedroom slow jams... just nuts

The reasons why Prince is not bigger commercially has always been because he covers so much ground musicically (and it alienates closed minded music fans of other genres (.. that can"t keep up or don't want to) and despite the fact that in the process he often did it extroidinarily well. That and of course his eccentric and downright (odd at times) persona

All the genres he does I can think of it (And sometimes he does more than one of them in the same song)

Rap 2/10 Most attempts bad, only P Control and Days of Wind any good
Pop 10/10 Master of this genre, Lets go crazy, 1999, Kiss
R and B 9/10 Very soulful brother, occasional bad r and b ballad ruins it
Rock 11/10 Prince's best genre, easily the rock and roll artist of ur dreams, eg Guitar, Dreamer, Purple Rain, Lion of Judah
Jazz 7/10, Some brilliant, some silly eg most of TRC
Ballads 10/10 Great with sad love ballads and erotic slow burn striptease
Electronica 10/10 Did he invent the synthesiser
Country and Western 5/10 only fleeting success here, eg One of Us
Gospel 8/10 Great Gospel balladeer, but some songs too sexual to be truly gospel.
Acapella 10/10, not only can he play, he can sing eg Adore, 4eva in my life
Dance 10/10 Master of funky dancing music, great dancer, loves tempo and beats
Funk 9/10 Very good here, but not as strong as say James Brown, Parliament and We can Funk was excreable
Acoustic 8/10 Good on the old geetar alone if he wants
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time
