Around The World In A Day Is Not Overrated If ATWIAD is overrated then Parade wasnt that good at all. ATWIAD had "Pop Life","Raspberry Beret" and "The Ladder". Parade only had "Kiss" and "Anotherloverholenyohead",thats just my favorites. But ATWIAD is a hella good album.

i think ATWIAD is perfectly rated. not overrated, not underrated.
certainly within non-prince-centric music geek circles, i think it's seen as not quite a classic, but home to a couple of hits and a few really interesting prince tracks. i don't think anyone puts it on the same level as SOTT, or even TGE. i think the same goes for within the world of prince fans. there are a handful of people who are big fans of this album, but there are handfuls of people who are big fans of ANY given prince album. i bet you could find a contingent of passionate RAVE fans on here. mostly, though, i think most people can agree that it's an enjoyable album...maybe not a penultimate prince album, but certainly not a stinker by any means. if i had any "extreme" comment about ATWIAD, i'd say that it spawned perhaps some of the best 12" singles of his career.

This was to me his greatest album album (including the remixes/b-sides). All of it was extremely infectuous and catchy while being deep at some points and playful and light in others. These were some of the best b-sides he put out in the 80's in my eyes. To this day I can still listen to the 21 minute "America" and not get bored by it and don't get me started about the extended version of "Girl". When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

1980 to 1988 can't be overrated,
I just ..... ATWIAD & Parade. Prince 4Ever.

the b-sides and 12" versions from this album's releases:
my only regret about this album is that the longer cuts of paisley park and rapsberry beret are not on it. perhaps he could have snuck another song or two on there as well, like SAIMH or Girl but i can see how they would be hard to fit in there. album is great. not overrated, not underrated. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

the extended Raspberry Beret is so funky its sick. Love the intro Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

This is probably the most playful album Prince ever put out. I love the fact that he dared to go out on a limb with this one and the fact that it is so different from others is why I can listen to P and nobody else but P somedays and not feel like I'm going to get sick.

Come and share your thoughts on the album thread A CELEBRATION: AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY http://prince.org/msg/7/311901 including a track by track discussion.
In a nutshell my view is: To many this was a disappointing follow up to Purple Rain. But I think he could have released Purple Rain again and some would have been disappointed. Personally I loved that he was pushing the boundaries of music, and making the music the focus. Sure it was a more laid back album, less frenetic and energised than its predecessor but I liked that aspect of it. Maybe some wanted Prince by the numbers, but invariably it's when he paints outside the lines that he creates something exciting and new. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. your rationale for saying that ATWIAD is NOT overrated is because Parade only had Kiss and Anotherlover... (as "hits" I'm assuming you mean or even if you mean as "good singles") is a weakly constructed argument. each one is entitled to their own opinion of course and I LOVE Parade. however, i think its a way better realized version of a "concept album" whereas ATWIAD, DESPITE its classic songs and underrated gems, just doesn't do it for me, as an ALBUM. again Condition of the Heart and Temptation are overblown and The Ladder tries too hard and still doesn't have the impact of say The Cross or Still Would Stand All Time. So those 3 of 9 tracks, bogs the album down to me and the omission of Hair is a major error in judgment.

Swa I'm with you The only reason ATWIAD wasn't bigger was because people were looking for more music along the lines of Purple Rain, I was too, it was high energy and so different But I loved ATWIAD when it came out, to the this day it is still my favorite album: the B side production was off the chain(we really only got a high level of Bside/long version music for Purple Rain ATWIAD & Parade) SOTT's 2 bsides were good I think WB knowing the output of music by the prince camp during the 1982-1986 years PR more specifically, should have given license for Prince to put out 2 albums: Around the World in a Day and possibly one with more high energy similar to PR:shoot they created something around 200 songs for the project I think the public in general would have listened to ATWIAD more closely, if there was another Prince album to go with it that was high energy Jill Jones should have had a PR period album as well as a Parade era album

one thing that helped Parade was that it had a different focus for the movie Condition of the Heart just does it for me, I listen to it all the time, but I love classical music and piano play so for me to hear it fused with Princes music just does wonders for me I would actually say the thing that makes Tempation and the Ladder seem pushed is I think (either I'm doing it my head) or Prince intended for Tempation 2B like Darling Nikki and the Ladder like Purple Rain. I love Eddie M's sax play on those 2 songs though

Yeah she was, and that's the diservice to the music, her album spanned from the 1999-Parade possibly SOTT years music wise G-Spot was a Purple Rain outtake as well as All Day All Night man what her PR era album would have been: probably would have had Wednesday on it too. 4 PR would have had Ice Cream Castles, the Glamorous Life, Apollonia 6, and Jill Jones 4 Parade: Mia Bocca(seriously a Parade era song) we would have had the Family, Mazarati Sheila E & Jill Jones by the time SOTT came around, there was less and less meshing of Prince(& band) and Proteges [Edited 7/17/09 7:59am]
