180 g vinyl pressings - who owns them?

Hi,

I am considering buying the Purple Rain 180 g vinyl edition (my old copy is played to death).

Anyone owns one of them? Is sound in any way different? And - are there other 180 g versions available?

Any feedback highly appreciated...

If you haven't seen the actual 180 gram vinyl release of Purple Rain, the artwork is atrocious. It looks like it was scaled up from the CD artwork. I can't vouch for the sound quality, though.

What is a 180 gram vinyl all about? How much heavier is it than a standard 33RPM? cool

I got it recently. Altho I haven't got my original vinyl copy even in the same continent to compare, I didn't jump up and say 'Wow that sounds amazing' when I first put it on, which I HAVE said to some discs I've bought.

Put it this way, it doesn't make me want to listen to the album any more or less than the cd, whereas some things I've bought recently do.

A standard vinyl is about 120 gram. The heavier weight and thickness of the 180 g, or "audiophile grade" vinyl helps resist warping and should maintain a smoother rotational mass. Deeper grooves can also be cut during manufacturing. That's about it.

A better way to achieve sonic benefits in a vinyl LP would be to repackage the platter(s) as 45rpm and use virgin vinyl with no impurities. Remastering using modern methods would, of course help the most.
