If U listened to the 600 cd's that U have, you wouldn't have to flip through files to be happier than, "so f-ing tired." [Edited 7/16/09 19:51pm] You still don't get it, do you? I *want* to buy the song. I *don't* want a streaming file. I *don't* want an mp3. I *don't* want digital music. I *want* to give artists money. Got it yet? How can you be so righteous when you're wrong? It just makes you look foolish. I was really looking forward to a local release of Lotusflower but alas I had to jump through the ebay hoop for that one. And you're right about modern mastering. Too loud and crappy sounding. He's not fool enough to attempt to do it in its original version. So the best thing to do is do a way different take on it. Just be glad he is realizing the fan favorites and attempting to do something relevant with them. I think out of some mad purple way, he is kind of paying respect by not bastardizing the song by recreating it as it was then, whcih has played a part of the Revolution myth.
Just like how he he re-did Dorothy Parker back in 2001-2002.

I remember when he played this back in LA (the night of three shows) I was sitting in on the soundcheck and thought it was cool that he was playing it but I was really surprised when he actually did it during the show. Yes, old song 4 many of us and I won't comment on that. What I did want to mention is that I noticed during the actual show he looked at the lyrics (on his MAC) almost the entire time. Prince has always glanced at the lyrics book that he use to use (of course now it's a MAC) but he does seem to be using the lyric "sheet" more and more. Not to spread rumors, he's always used the book but he does seem to look at the "sheet" a little more often nowadays. Just wondering out loud...

Instead of comparing it to the original version, I am happy to be able to listen to both. The original version had more energy but the band work is great on the new one, IMO.

I swear some people hate on things just because they're new. If nobody had ever heard the original and he released it today, I fully expect there would be plenty of people moaning that Prince has lost it etc. Same with many of the other bootlegs.Good on yer!! Hoping to expect more similar stuff in the future? The only thing I don't like about 'non Jazz artists' 'going jazz' is that 1) It always comes across as disrespect to me. I'm a huge jazz fan, and those singers/musicians are fully merged in that genre of music It's like people think Jazz is easy music to do Like when Chaka Khan did a jazz album I always come to the conclusion that the person feels a bit washed up, so let me take the easy way and do a jazz album There is a way of singing to jazz music too and on her album she missed the mark times 2, she still had that rock funk voice just sang it 'mellow'... still not jazz Now I've always loved Prince's jazz fusion, that touch Eric, Sheila and other purple soldiers brought to Purple Music back in the foundational years I love the 'jazz touches' heard on the Family: Susannah's Pajamas, Yes, the Parade outtake:Old Friends 4 Sale the jazz renditions heard on the Parade tour the jazzy feel of the Rainbow Children and of course Madhouse, but it wasn't jazz but a fusion of it in Prince's music even A Large Room with No Light(1986) is jazz fusion + purple music I'll say it one more time, I like this IALRWNoL (remix)as long as I look at it like that, I won't be so critical.

Why are people so precious about Jazz? It smacks of elitism or ivory tower hipness. Artists should be able to tool around in any genre, hybrid, classification, whatever. Why get hung up on what is Jazz? It's this type of attitude that closed people's minds to the great music of Madhouse. If it sounds good and has soul, that is my standard.
Just remember, Miles and Prince shared more than a friendship. They shared the same iconoclast, renegade and revolutionary approach to musical convention.

The more people experiment with it the more people hear it. Therefore, the more people get into it. WOW!
Nice new studio version and I especially dig the fact that he partially plays the same tune on guitar where the flute plays. Indeed good that he took this song from the shelf, so to say. I was amazed that he'd played it recently on the 3 concerts, but this means he may be give the song a new life! Thanks for the link!

I wonder - was this put up online cos Prince is currently having a spat with Lisa? (he sent her a threatening lawyers letter to shut her up about the revolution days) .hits 2 birds with one stone - he gets a bit of attention via the Montreux site/show and also gets a jab at Lisa and Wendy.... he's all cryptic...some things don't change LOL
so he releases a track from the revolution days, with absolutely no revolution era members present on the new version...a way of saying....'see, you didn't have an influence on me then, and I don't need you now'..... the original is busy but it also has a SPACE of its own....its own unique vibe....and the interesting thing is that W&L, and even more importantly Eric Leeds (was Atlanta Bliss on this too - or just Eric?), so put their stamp on this track, much like a lot of the Dream Factory tracks..... I wouldn't go so far as to say the new track is inferior - just not as quirky IMHO..and its the quirky vibe of the original that makes it stand out.... all IMHO of course

I think he could make a great album by reworking some of the unreleased tracks like this and make it sound like The Vault which is a great album, play this song back 2 back with Splash, just wicked.

I got you OF4S. 86 was "one" of my fav periods because of the chemistry of the band at the time. Discussing bands is what we do here. We do this, it's what we do! I'd love to see Eric Leeds come to Montreux, always P's best sax player for me.
OldFriends4Sale said: I did say it, it you read my post with your attitude you would get it,
I was comparing songs And I didn't say I didn't like it (again if you read my post) I did like it I said I liked it for a remix and I liked it for a live performance at the Jazz fest I know mostly who played on the original: Eric Leeds also talked about it in an interview: Eric Sheila Lisa Wendy, Atlanta Levi Susannah No your out of it, to be a Prince fan and not realize how much bands and band members matter to Prince music, there are always discussion on it Your nuts Yeah he's doing the show, I'm happy, no one is complaining about that or his current band. This whole discussion is about the remix of a classic song THAT'S IT, U ARE MAKING IT MORE THAN THAT. SHUT THE HELL UP AND LET PEOPLE DISCUSS WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT MACADAMIAN laurarichardson said: "you don't get the chemistry that you hear on the original"
Maybe you meant to say that in your post but you did not say that. This versions chemistry is fine as this is the Jazz Fest version not the original. Once again live in the present if you did not know who played on the orignal may guess is you would not care about the chemistry of the players. Some of you are so out of it you don't even realize how much the boots, vault and original players really don't matter to the average person whom I assume might comprise the 7,000 or so people who brough tickets to this show. He is doing the jazz thing now so deal with it or move on. ----

I understood your post and for the most part agreed with it. Sometimes "jazz" is used as a marketing trick for middle-of-the-road hacks. And I noted your openness to P's "jazz." I was responding to several posts that had a knee-jerk reaction to anything that is not Purple Rain 2.

I like W&L's stuff but damn.
It's been 23 years since they really made a contribution to the man's work. They are not the end all be all of Prince. If they were they would have done more than what they have done.Compare the body of work and then make factual arguements.
