4 the Tears in Your Eyes USA for Africa/Live Aid or the Funky/Jazzy (the versions I have are listed as "4 the Tears/Thank You" or the other way around) Live version(s)?
So different, I'm having a tough time deciding which. [Edited 7/15/09 14:08pm]

I do think the live "style" is a bit odd for the lyrics, but damn it's nice!

The song is called "4 the tears in your eyes" The "your" was not spelled UR. I know it's petty but that drives me nuts Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Oh Jeez! And here I was wondering if I'd get it wrong and piss someone off for spelling them out since it was post Purple Rain. Will you be ok?

Besides the "B-side" disc version, how many other versions are there of this song?

I have a live one from Avery Fisher Hall in NYC during the One Night Alone Tour. He played it during soundcheck and it has an uptempo D.C. gogo beat to it. Which surprisingly worked quite well when you compare it to the original. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I'm sorry I should have kept it to myself. It's just me Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I have 2 live ones in the funky/bluesy/jazzy style. At least one them is from Soundcheck/After Party @ Shea's 14:33 long. The other might be Tralf music hall/ONA

I like the We Are the World version because it's just so random and weird. It doesn't sound like anything Prince had done before and even more, it doesn't sound like anything that would belong on We Are the World. It took a while to get adjusted to after I bought that album, but I grew to love it.

We Are The World (Original version) The Hits / The B-sides (live - Video version) Great song. I love both, but I prefer the original version. Prince 4Ever.

Hello
recorded in the Spring of 1985 Hello is essentially a blow by blow description of the evening of the We R the World session:background vocals by Lisa Wendy & Jill Jones A line of the song had been written for Prince to sing and a space in the studio blocked out for him to stand next to Michael Jackson. But at some point during the course of the evening, he decided not to show up, and instead took a limousine to the restaurant Carlos & Charlie's on Sunset Boulevard with Jill Jones and several bodyguards. (Huntsberry was not present.) While he has never explained the suddenness of his decision not to attend, Prince later said in interviews that he would have felt uncomfortable around so many entertainment luminaries, and that he preferred to work with close friends. This rings true; Prince in any situatio needed to feel in control, something that would have been impossible at a session dominated by his arch rival, Michael Jackson. Recording of "We Are The World" proceeded without Prince. Across town, as Prince and his entourage exited the Mexican restaurant at about 2 a.m., several paparazzi descended on him. One particular audaciaous photographer jumped into his limousine. Prince and his friends were justifiably frightened and outraged, and the bodyguards reacted by seizing the photographer's camera and forcefully ejecting him from the car. The police were summoned, and one bodyguard - 6ft 9inch, 300 pound Lawrence Gibson- was arrested for battery, and the other, Prince's friend Wally Safford, for robbery. Seeking damage control, Prince agreed to contribute a song to the We Are The World album. He cut "4 The Tears In Your Eyes" during a rare day off on the Purple Rain tour; Hello (Hello) Hello (Hello) I tried 2 tell them that I didn't want 2 sing But I'd gladly write a song instead They said OK and everything was cool Till a camera tried 2 get in my bed

It was one of those rare treats from back in the 80's. A new Prince song without a Prince album being released. Another one was the "Bright Lights, Big City" soundtrack with "Good Love". of the released versions, I prever the video version from the "Hits/B-sides".
i think it suits the lyrics better. the original is all ATWIAD-ed up and grates on me a little.

4 The Tears In Your Eyes
Long ago there was a man Changed stone 2 bread with one touch of his hand He made the blind see and the dumb understand He died 4 the tears in your eyes, your eyes Many people came from all around 2 hear this man preach with glorious sound He spoke of man in harmony and love abound He died 4 the tears in your eyes, your eyes Your eyes, your eyes He died 4 the tears in your eyes CHORUS: 4 the tears in your eyes if they're tears of sorrow 4 cents may be all that they're worth 4 the rising sun each day assures us The meek shall inherit the earth, the earth Faith is a word we all should try Describing the man who willingly died Believe that your hunger, sorrow, and fears Is less than the tears in your eyes, your eyes Less than the tears in your eyes 4 the tears in your eyes if they're tears of sorrow 4 cents may be all that they're worth (All they're worth) 4 the rising sun each day assures us The meek shall inherit the earth (Say it again) CHORUS (All they're worth) Thank U © 1985 Controversy Music - ASCAP

What is it about songs like this, and God(the dance electric) and even God Is Alive, the Cross that sounds so natural, so non preachy or marginalizing?

I do like the WATW version on the rare occasions I listen to it; it's kinda quirky and... I dunno... odd. But I wouldn't want to listen to it over and over again. The video version, though... sublime.
