Prince on Acid Do you like Prince when he's Trippy? Musically speaking, I know Prince lives quite the clean life. However, sometimes his music is so creative it's seems like he's trippin'. What do you feel is Prince's most experimental, 60's tripped out work? Do you think Prince experiemental work is his best? Also, is there any Prince song or album that's too way out there for you, musically?

The Black Album seems pretty tripped out. Sometimes successfully like Le Grind, Dead On It and Bob George, and sometimes not, like Superfunkycalifragisexy. Chaos And Disorder also has an edgy and unconventional feel to it. The title track is probably the best example and the result is pretty good, even though I Like It There and The Same December are better but less tripped out.
I don't think his experimental music is his best in general but he needs to go there every now and then to reach those mountain peaks like 319 or Wasted Kisses.

I dig the hell out of Bob George. If Prince was high when he cut that, it might be the only case in history where something good came out of recreational drug use.
LOL. I love a Man who:

Although the psychedelic influence in ATWAID is obvious, it's mainly a pop record and I wouldn't even count most of it as particularly trippy - well a bit flowers and wavy arms trippy yes, but not weird experimental trippy.
I'm not sure his experimental stuff is necessarily his best, not when you put it up against the simplicity of something like Kiss. But experimentation in music is always going to lead to interesting listening - not necessarily comfortable listening, but definitely the weirder the better for me. He seems to weave a lot of complexity into his weirder stuff too (or maybe it's the complexity that makes it weird) which means you're always hearing new things in it, even years later. Songs like Automatic, Bob George, Crystal Ball, Others Here With Us, Purple Music, I'll never get tired of them. I also like the short weird stuff, the type of weird little number that comes in handy in when you've only got a minute or two of space available at the end of a mix (particularly back in the days of cassette mixes when blank tape was to be avoided at all costs). Stuff like For You, Sister, Tambourine, New Position, I Wonder U, Do U Lie, Tangerine, Had U, My Little Pill. If Prince were to go into the studio blindfolded randomly banging his head off things and making up lyrics on the fly, I'd be very interested to hear the results. What can I say, I like weird stuff. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I love it when he gets trippy and goes off the rails. Totally unencumbered by convention.
In the early work, I'd say stuff like For You (the song), Annie Christian, etc. Don't know if they are "60s" type trippy, but... I think my favorite example would be Digital Garden. Would love more stuff like that. The song 3121 was a good attempt, and there are spots on Lotus that come close.

ATWIAD is trip
and both the Black Album and Lovesexy have so many little vocal pieces and conversations buried in the mix... When you're high you hear them loud and clear.

I like the new version of "In A Large Room With No Lights". It has a nice feel to it. [Edited 7/15/09 21:10pm]

Yes, I think there are trippy moments on most all the albums! My fave is Black Album, but his most 60's-ish is Around the World... and there are very 60's tones in bits of SOTT. I think his experimental work is the best. I love "The Ball". My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
