It reminds me a little of Come, how that was rather understated but has stood the test of time, better than TGE - All just humble opinion of course.

i can see myself coming around in time and appreciating planet earth more in years to come than i do now. that's happened a lot with me and prince albums in the past. odder things could happen... lol

The problem with PE is that it was made in the 00's , if it was released in the 90's or 80's more would like it i guess... wink

None of the songs grab me. Guitar is catchy, but just an okay song, nothing special. Thats the term that comes to mind when I think of this album: Nothing Special.

Planet Earth is amazing. It really gets back to the "song" idea, as opposed ot just jams like we got on Lotusflow3r and MPLSound.

I love Planet Earth, and it had a huge influence on me as a musician.

OH, so expect more crap? lol

I know what I hear. And it's the worst Prince studio album in his catalog.

Yeah, but isn't Newpower Soul one of your favourite albums? I'm not sure that we can trust your hearing. tease

Yeah, but I think people don't like New Power Soul because it is all straight R & B. Not something Prince usually does.
It's always been a favorite of mine, simply because I wanted Prince to do an all R & B album.

The song is a blatant rip-off of 70ies disco music. There is NOTHING original about it.

"Planet Earth," is a nice album...I can say that I have listened to "3121," and "Musicology," more often...although it will get it's share of home airplay when the mood calls 4 it. cool

For me the only problem I have with this album is its so easy going and laid back that it hardly seems like you can tell it was on when it finishes playing.

Just seems like its in the background all the time.

Planet Earth is a good album...not the best P album. Some folks love 2 put this album down, I'm glad P decided 2 release it. I'll take all the Purple-Funk I can get!

Ok this comment I just don't get - I think that PE gets the hate it does coz it's got NO funk on it. Chelsea Rogers is disco, so that could count as sped-up funk (and it's the only track I kinda like on the album), but that's it. What other P abum has NO funk?!

PE's best songs are...OK, and then there's unlistenable stuff like Lion of Judah and Resolution,
Musicology's problem was that it was not high enough standard and there was Life O the Party, but there was also the title track, Reflections and On the Couch and overall it was fairly decent.
3121 had Incense and Candles and Beautiful, Loved and Blessed which I can't stand and a number of trax which you feel could be better, but it's got 3121, the Word, Love, Black Sweat and FURY! (and, see, the fact that SNL was better is not a downer to me coz I get shivers remembering that performance when I hear the album track too),
Lotusflow3r and MPLSound are far more cohesive albums, whatever you feel about them (I think 3121 is more cohesive than Musicology or PE too),

Basically PE kinda fades away and has little redeeming features. I know that it's often ppl who were at the O2 performances who like it, and maybe they're hearing something we're not. However, albums like Come, C&O and even NPS, which many have later come back to and found that they have lots of gems, were all records that gave me some positive feeling or excitement which then got forgotten or faded away. PE got none o that. The album I think it has most in common with in that sense is:

RAVE

Actually, I think they are very similar and probably my least favorites.
(D&P also fits this category but at least it had Gett OFF!)

nothing is wrong with it. it just doesn't hang together as an album very well. sounds mostly like he got a jones to do a pop rock album and these are mostly the leftovers from sessions when he got the idea that turned into LotusFlow3r, plus a few 3121 outtakes thrown in

It also feels very insincere... especially the title-track and the not-so-thinly veiled JW propaganda.

For me, it was the lack of unpredictable drum beats on the album. Usually Prince puts together some pretty nice beats. And I don't mean deep base, I'm talking about beats that feel like there moving towards, away or through you. 3121, Shockadelica, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Joy in Repetition, Anotherloverholenyohead and Lady Cab Driver just to name a few, there are more but then I'd be rambling more than I already am. And like Anxiety said, the lack of the classic Prince melodies leaves this one a little flat for me. When Prince is in his best element you have the killer off beat beat that is actually right on the beat, mixed with a melody that blows your mind and lyrics that twist your soul. Usually when the beats are lacking Prince makes up for it with a killer guitar, piano or some other far out sound. There were only about three songs on PE that I liked enough to go back to. Like Randy Jackson would say "It was just Aight for me."

I think Planet earth still sounds good.

what is so bad about it? Well the music is weak, mostly. It isn't quite as bad as musicology. I really liked 3121 and like the new album(s) pretty well too.

I feel just the opposite. I can't play any of the 3 CD's that made up Lotusflow3r mor than once per week, and that's just to see if time makes them sound better to me. Well it's been nearly three full months of owning my Target purchase and I still thinks it's way below par for a Prince CD (s). Planet Earth was certainly not his best album but I've deffinately got my moneys worth if I were to count how many times I played it.

i really like it. It sounds like a very 'L.A.' album for Prince. the only parts I guess I don't enjoy are Mr. Goodnight and Future Baby Mama. It's a mostly rocky-ish record and those two songs kind of stick out.

And just to be picky, I don't enjoy that up-tempo bit in Planet Earth. It's so chirpy.
