The Meaning Of The Song "Dolphin" Well I always thought the song was P talking 2 god about being reincarnated and becuz hes been bad in his other lives god keeps refusing him in2 heaven and reincarnating him ova and ova. Stupidly when I first heard the song I thought he was singing 2 a lover
If I'm under water, will U find me? (Find me {x4}) Will U shine a light and try 2 guide me? It's happened before, I've knocked on your door But U wouldn't let me in What u guys think? Everybody's looking 4 the ladder
Everybody wants salvation of the soul The steps U take are no easy road But the reward is great 4 those who want 2 go

I think the Dolphin's blowhole represents an anal fixation. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think "Dolphin" is another underrated Prince song, as well. I thought it was about his music getting respected by the industry and some fans, and maybe especially radio.
I'd love to hear his inspiration for this song.

that is a very good interpetation of this song....
even in one of his newest songs he says..... If you can learn 2 open ur eyes under water Then you and me won't drown Without each other or in 17 days he says that "shes probably underwater..i doubt that u can here me" he uses water elememts as kinda like his translation of this world..or this life..interesting..Dolphins are sopposed to have a spiecal connection with humans.. Dolphin: symbol of Harmony, Freedom, Communication, Trust The Dolphin can teach us much about playfulness, and harmony with others. Dolphins have a strong sense of community with each other as well as the world around them. Their communication skills are extraordinary, and one can see that these skills indicate an intelligence which has also been associated with healing and perhaps a higher consciousness. Learn from the dolphin: Wisdom (Intelligence) Harmonious balance in life Communication as a healing voice Trust in others via community spirit i think the song is kinda sad...its Prince's vulnerable side spiritually..he feels kinda like he isnt being listened to Marry me 2day and 2night we'll make love until the world stops turning

It's about him and his relationship to Warner Brothers. He asks them how they want to judge him and his music if they don't even give him a chance. He wants to be free as a dolphin so they could perceive his music as what it is and not as an outcome of arguments and disagreements.

I think it could be song by anyone who feels opressed, to their opressor.
Why does my brother have 2 go hungry When U told him there was food 4 all? This is the man that stands next 2 the man That stands 2 catch U when U fall (Oh!)

This was covered not even two months ago, maybe three at the most.
It ain't about reincarnation. It's all about his relationship with Warner Bros. Kinda obviously actually.

This is about Prince being very annoyed that the friggin animals in the friggin sea are getting more attention than he is. "this especially prepared potato is called pomme de terre"

Oh is it obvious now?...well I didnt catch on 2 that..so its not that obvious, Dig U Better Dead and Face Down is what u call obvious...but not Dolphin...infact I still believe its about reincarnation...however other peoples views on it are intresting and i suppose thats whats great about P's music...songs are viewed diffrently 2 diffrent ears [Edited 7/6/09 17:20pm] Everybody's looking 4 the ladder

ive always interpreted really loosely as a song about his relationship with society in general. this song always made me feel bad for him, because it sounded like he felt really isolated and ostracized. Change it one more time..

I was under the impression it was based on the french meaning of the word "Dauphiné" meaning the Prince / Dolphine , it was adopted as prince due to the fact that the heir to the throne (ie the prince) of France would be known as "le Dauphiné".
So as it was during the 0(+> era it was saying if I came back as prince would you listen to to me then..as a kind of message to the WB crowd at the time for losing him. Just me thoughts. [Edited 7/6/09 18:14pm]

its incomplete... its one of many P songs that he thought the hook and melody were so strong that the obscure and nursery rhyme type lyrics didn't matter
I'm sure he feels differently now. Not one of his finner moments IMO Dance... Let me see you dance

To be honest, I think it's more to make people wonder than anything else. Sure, it could very well be about Warner Brothers, and it probably partially is, but I honestly think it's just Prince being the quirky person he is/was. let us enjoy ourselves, this rhythm is ill. i want to sit on your penis

I agree with those who said the song is about Warner Brothers. That has always been my interpretation of the song, anyway. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Any other time I'd buy that. But given he was in the depths of his fight w/ WB, it's certainly 100% about Warner Bros. So many of his songs were about WB, from The Gold Experience, Exodus, Chaos and Disorder, and even a bit on Emancipation. I remember my first reaction when I heard the line: "Why does my brother have 2 go hungry When U told him there was food 4 all?" I immediately thought of Little Richard, and how he was in the headlines a bit in the 90's about having nothing after all he's done in rock n' roll and the records he's sold. Richard was getting a lot of disrespect back then. He was honored in some awards show, and was only allowed to stand up and wave to the audience, while IN the audience, opposed to getting on stage and having a say about the award. Now whether that line is about Little Richard, I don't know, but he came to mind for whatever reason.
