Mixing Sex and Religion Not Even Prince's idea

I read an article on Prince's career and it mentioned that Prince's infamous combination of sex and religion back in the day was not even his idea. It was a manager or someone that gave him the gimmick and he ran with it. I'm trying to remember the source. Anybody remember reading or hearing anything like that?

You know, they found out there's a universal orgasm vocalization that sounds just like the vowel sound in "Yahweh", or "Allah" or "God," etc.

This relationship is familiar in the heart's of everyone. A Spiritual 2getherness while a man and woman come 2gether sexually is a blessing from God. That is what love is. I think it's the oldest idea in the book.

I Love the way that Prince expresses this love. cool

I have one from the Lovesexy era called Sex & Religion
I'll post it in a bit

But Prince never really presented the conflict of Sex & Religion until Purple Rain

Controversy had the Our Father Prayer but that was pure New Wave and only had to do with a reaction to the Controversy the speculation and gossip

But from For U - 1999 there was none(conflict)
Purple Rain gave us:God the Dance Electric(lyrical)
God the Love Theme(instrumental from the love scene in PR)
Computer Blue (lust love and the righteous one) the longer versions give us a more complete picture...
the backward message at the end of Darling Nikki
Around the World in a Day: Temptation

Parade had none(conflict)

*don't remember any from Dream Factory or Camille

Sign of the Times had none(conflict)

Lovesexy brought in a stronger idea of conflict between passions(sexual) and God/religion

falloff @ "way of the laces"

This goes back to Thomas Dorsey's songs and the controversy that erupted when Gospel music was mostly hymns and not songs like Rev. Dorsey's. When Gospel music fused into Blues and created the Soul sound that was made famous in the 1960's.

Ray Charles,Sam Cooke,Jackie Wilson,Marvin Gaye,Smokey Robinson, and many that I can't remember created the sound before Prince. It was a huge controversy for years and it still continues to this day in the churches.

btw. the whole disco era was very suggestive,

Donna Summer: Love to Love You Baby, I Feel Love, Bad Girls etc. comes to my mind.

She was there before Prince - being naughty... I love her music cool

edit.. but disco wasn't not about religion though...

Your momma! (ok now that I got that off my chest)

Look folks we have a scholar in our midst. There is a huge difference between mixing the secular and the spiritual and mixing veiled ( I would Die 4 You) and oftentimes outright Christian messages (The Cross) with outright x rated lyrics and profanity and adrogyny.

What I'm trying to communicate is that I read somewhere that Prince's religious/excessively erotic image was crafted FOR him not created BY him. I will try and locate the article.

By the way...someone mentioned Marvin Gaye. Yes he wrote sexual songs but when's the last time you came across a picture of Marvin Gaye with make up and a lady perm perched naked on a rock - good gawd! And as always remember...to all the mean spirited bastards out there..I hate you all. Thank you

Well Marv (during his last few concerts) had his hair "chemically treated" and he did strip down during "Sexual Healing" wearing a leather G-string..(which he really had no business wearing..and he did mention P's name when he did it).

But in music there's nothing orginal anyway..everyone borrows and steals from everyone.

And someone mentioned P did it longer and better than Marvin..well P outlived him and was getting into high gear when Marvin was taken away from us.
