he uses water elememts as kinda like his translation of this world..or this life..interesting..Dolphins are sopposed to have a spiecal connection with humans..

Dolphin: symbol of Harmony, Freedom, Communication, Trust
The Dolphin can teach us much about playfulness, and harmony with others. Dolphins have a strong sense of community with each other as well as the world around them.

Their communication skills are extraordinary, and one can see that these skills indicate an intelligence which has also been associated with healing and perhaps a higher consciousness.

Learn from the dolphin:

Wisdom (Intelligence)
Harmonious balance in life
Communication as a healing voice
Trust in others via community spirit
i think the song is kinda sad...its Prince's vulnerable side spiritually..he feels kinda like he isnt being listened to sad

Prince also sings in the song, "Open Book," You'd never be able to read this girl...so the open book is closing.

Prince is looking for someone.

People say that "Dolphin," is about Warner Brother's...although the song's meanings seem deeper than his relationship with them.

Dolphin's are known to be highly intelligent...that probably includes a memory that goes back to the beginning of time. With Prince's overall music, I sometimes think that the woman Prince is looking for may have had amnesia. cool

You know, that made no sense to me, whatsoever.

It could just be that Prince is doing what so many other artists have done and he wrote a song with no real meaning, just to screw with people and watch as they try to figure out what it means.

What's funnier than watching people assign meanings to a song?

let us enjoy ourselves, this rhythm is ill. i want to sit on your penis

Maybe it's a song about those damn tuna nets. Or maybe it's about Tuna from the 2002 Celebration.

I have to say, that original post made no sense to me at all, except for the Dolphin's intelligence.

He could be saying that he is the highest form of human evolution (intelligence, talent, beauty, compassion) and he is still unaccepted, which says something about US.

prince mentioned that he wrote the song after reading betty j eadie's book
"embraced by the light" in which she describes what happened to her during
a near death experience.

in fact, more song on The Gold Experience deal with themes of death and of
rebirth in their lyrics (endorphinmachine and gold are two good examples).

for me personally, ever since i caught the premier of the video on mtv all
those years ago it's been one of my all time favorit prince songs. this is
the one song i was yearning to hear most in good loud quality once the cd
was finally released. it remains my favorit song on the album.

i think it's a brilliant song and it's obvious that prince favoured it too
because he made a video for it and wanted to release it as a single. he did
a live performance of it on letterman and he's played it at several after-
shows since 2001.

the lyrics, contrary to what others have said, are quite clever imo. they
deal with the theme of rebirth quite well and adress his battle with WBs
at the same time whilst also being in another way simply a song about a
relationship.

that guitarsolo is short but perfect. i love love love that solo and the
way it's visualised in the video.

nothing but love for this song from me. bow

This is a great analysis. I love your insight, especially concerning Prince's use of water as a symbol of isolation or a divide between truth and perceptions.

I've always loved "Dolphin" and agree that it's a purposely veiled reference to Warner Brothers but also a double entendre that could be about his relationship to society on a whole or with another person.

I was under the impression it was based on the french meaning of the word "Dauphiné" meaning the Prince / Dolphine , it was adopted as prince due to the fact that the heir to the throne (ie the prince) of France would be known as "le Dauphiné".

So as it was during the 0(+> era it was saying if I came back as prince would you listen to to me then..as a kind of message to the WB crowd at the time for losing him.

Just me thoughts.
[Edited 7/6/09 18:14pm]

always interpreted it that way too. hear people saying in here that the lyrics are crap. This is one of his most multi-layered songs ever.

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart?

Obviously this seems to refering to his own body of work, but it can easily be construed as a reference to the holy scripture. Either way fits right into the general theme of the song.

How will U know if I'm even in the right key
If U make me stop before I start?

Considering the then recent name change this seems to be saying that his output to that point was only the beginning and that type-casting him into his 80's persona was limiting his new found creativity

the entire verse seems to indicate a frustration with the fact that his past achievements haven't earned him the trust or confidence from others (in the bussines) to allow him to explore new paths.

CHORUS:
If I came back as a dolphin
Would U listen 2 me then?
Would U let me be your friend?
Would U let me in?
U can cut off all my fins
But 2 your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let U tell me how 2 swim
And I'll come back again as a dolphin

as some-one already mentioned the chorus seems to ask if a return to the name prince would change the listeners attitude towards his new output. In retrospect it's interesting to see him already saying "I'll come back again as a dolphin" (ie, I'll come back as Prince again)

also interesting:
* the US 5 dollar bill is refered to as 'a fin'
* 'fin' is the french and spanish word for end (spanish language featured multiple times on TGE)
both translations would fit perfectly well within the theme of the song, meaning either "you can take my money" or "you won't allow me to reinvent my music" but I won't submit.

Why does my brother have 2 go hungry
When U told him there was food 4 all?
This is the man that stands next 2 the man
That stands 2 catch U when U fall (Oh!)

there's an interesting play on the words 'man stand', defined by the urban dictionary as:
The act of a man standing outside a shop while his wife/girlfriend/partner shops inside. Man Standing involves looking into space, at other women, or in the case of multi story shopping centers, leaning on the railings of an upper floor watching the people below.

the image of one standing outside waiting for the other to end his/her shopping could easily match prince's attitude at the time towards the music bussines. the lyric could also be interpreted as : this is the man (prince) that stands next to 'THE MAN' (ie WB?) who stands to catch you when you fall (prince again). I take this to mean, considdering the previous two lines, that he's telling fellow artist: "I'm here to 'catch you' when the music bussines screws you over.

If I'm under water, will U find me? (Find me {x4})
Will U shine a light and try 2 guide me?
It's happened before, I've knocked on your door
But U wouldn't let me in

* the possible religious interpretation of 'shine a light' speaks for itself
* Water is both a symbol of life or death, given the name change it's not that farfedged to suspect prince meant one or both.
* guide can also be interpreted as Tracker (occupation), an individual who can follow the path left behind by animals, people or machines, thus reversing the meaning to "Will you follow me?" this perfectly precedes the next line.

this is just some of the associations I make when I hear this song. Nowhere am I saying Prince actually meant all this (I'm not a mind reader, I don't know what he was thinking) my point is just that there's some richness to these lyrics.
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

This song was inspired by a book called "embracing the light" which was about a lady who died on the operating table and could see herself looking down from above.
She goes on a spiritual journey while clinically dead, quite an uplifting book.
Prince actully went to meet the lady, I believe she was native american.
hope this helps

This is what i read in a French forum (thank you Chak for the info!):

In French: A dolphin is the name given to the King's heir (hence: a prince)... And this son g could be seen also as a reflection given by Prince on retaking his name....

Hmm.

My thoughts (partially covered by above comments, but I'll expand a little):

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart?

The current (at the time) Warners dispute over shackling him creatively: "Hey Prince - write something, ya know... catchy, like ya used ta!"

How will u know if i'm even in the right key
If u make me stop before I start

Same thing - Prince referring to the countless times he wasn't given the benefit of the doubt artistically.

If I came back as a dolphin would u listen 2 me then?
Would u let me be your friend?
Would u let me in?

I think he's saying, "What do I have to change about myself / my music etc. for you to 'suits' you take me seriously?"

U can cut off all my fins but to your ways I will not bend
I'll die before I let u tell me how to swim
An I'll come back again as a dolphin

Cutting off his 'dolphin fins' would mean him compromising himself. And he's not about to do it, even though they're backing him into a corner.

Why does my brother have 2 go hungry?
When u told me there was food 4 all?

Bit of a dodgy one this... Prince is either continuing his afore-mentioned sentiments, suggesting that artists aren't being 'rewarded'.

This is the man that stands next to the man
Who stands to catch you when you fall

The man that "stands 2 catch you when u fall" is, surely, God. And Prince says he will stand by Him. Yep, he's definitely going off tack a bit now!

Not sure how that makes sense with the chorus sentiment, but there you go.

If I'm underwater will u find me?
Will u shine a light and try 2 find me?

"Help!! I'm drowning, cos they cut off my (artistic) fins! Someone gimme a record deal life-preserver, quick!!"

It happened before
I knocked on your door
But u wouldn't let me in...

Is this referring to Warners turning him away? Maybe not, cos they never did, but they DID second-guess him in '78. He's never happy is he?!
wink

Phew.

Hope at least one person reads that, cos I instantly regretted trying to dissect it as soon as I started!

In agreement with what someone else said above, any Prince 'explanation' of his songs are to be taken with a pinch of salt and as a result, any close inspection of his lyrics is ultimately futile.

He'd probably say one thing today and something different tomorrow.

Basically it is about WB Records, but it is a parallel to The World..

Some humans care more for certain animals more than "..the man that stands next to 'The Man' who stands to catch The Man when he falls."

This "Man" is so selfish and evil that he values the life of an animal over another man.

So, if Prince was a dolphin, you would listen to him, but you would still never control him (Prince speaking).

Prince symbolically killed "Prince at WB" in order to return free with the ability to record under a new name (or so he thought).

Before the Tsunami in Southeast Asia, dogs, horses, and cattle still abandoned their owners because they were more in harmony with nature and The Creator, YHWH. Some of these animals even attacked their owners as a warning.

(Pets are really captives with shelter, perks, and affection, but all of them want to be free!)

Humans love what they seek to control and mold, and will never listen out of arrogance and a "god-Complex".

Years later after this song, the music industry is suffering ..out of arrogance, promoting "what sells" over what is right, and greed.

Looking back,.. The song is fitting..

I doubt Prince ever performs it again for several reasons: 1 being that it touches on Re-incarnation.

To the best of my knowledge, Prince has never complained against God in a song (its possible, even us christians do it) in a song. Althogh as much as he claimed to be interested in Jesus throught his career, in the song "7" he talks about reincarnation ( & 1 other part in that album). As well as @ that time & today I always took that song as the situation between him & warner bros. Many of his song have been about warner bros. Can anyone give an example where Prince says something derrogitory about God?
