Not including Kamasutra, just because, Rave is Prince's worst album IMO.

It represents the absolute rock bottom in the second half of the 90s downturn, and it was the first album that just made my heart sink when I first gave it a spin.

What would come after Rave - Musicology and 3121, for the same reasons, they sound like Prince chasing trends and playing catch up with the crop of teenybop and popular chart R&B acts at the time. *ick*

All the usual suspects in this thread (Come, C&D, NPS, etc) contain way more interesting ideas, songs and concepts than these tree pieces of transparent tripe put together.

I agree. Rave wins hands down. To me it just seems to mark the point at which prince was at his most irrelevant and at his lowest ebb. The worst look too. The opening track with all the multi tracking is just so lame i feel embarrassed listening to it even when i'm on my own.

Imagine actually playing Rave in the presence of somebody you're trying to impress.
I'm testing postive 4 the funk

Who gives a shit if he "sold out" with this record? Oh, apparently the purists. Please.

I'm glad he "sold out". It's a dumb ass term to begin with. When you're making a movie, and BARELY getting it done (ie: financing, etc), you have to make something people across the board are going to hear and want to listen to. He couldn't have had the success with Purple Rain and it been a bunch of funk songs like 1999 or Controversy. And he didn't sell out to pop either. "Little Red Corvette" was a ROCK song, and that got 80% of the WHITE people in the audience.

Most of Purple Rain is a rock album, not a pop album. WDC is pop, as is IWD4U and BIAS, but the other songs are rock oriented songs. Doesn't mean they sound like Motley Crue or Bon Jovi, but aren't all R&B either.

When you consider an artists success, you have to consider ALL of it. PR was Prince's Thriller. Almost every really good artist has THAT album in the discography. It could be a debut album, or one further down the line. But to dismiss a great album for the sake of keepin' it old school or whatever is ridiculous. It'd be like cutting Thriller from MJ's discography, or Jagged Little Pill from Alanis' set. Or how about the janet. album from Janet's past? Or Like A Prayer from Madonna's past. It just doesn't make sense.

To all who responded to my post. I loved Purple Rain, I bought it once on record back in 84 (still have the record) and twice on CD. Most of Prince's fans I have spoken to who were fans before 84 claimed that the album was a pop sell out since there wasn't any funk songs on it. It's something I've heard even here on the Org since I signed up. It didn't bother me that no funk songs were on Purple Rain because there was still Apollonia 6, The Time and Sheila E. spewing his funk in heavy rotation at the time.

I honestly can't think of an album where I haven't even liked a single track on it. If I had to choose I'd say "Graffiti Bridge." "The Ladder" is awesome but for me, the rest of the album is forgettable.

I guess the entire album is indeed forgettable then.

The Ladder was on the Around The World In A Day album not Graffiti Bridge.

Oops... did I say "Graffiti Bridge?" I meant "Around The World In A Day."

Gee, I'm so glad there are plenty of people around to correct me. Lucky me.

The two albums I have never heard keep on appearing on the worst list; Karmasutra and Chaos and Disorder. People talk about them so much I just want to hear them to see how bad they really are. I can't find even used versions in my local f.y.e. stores. I don't know if that means there weren't many put out in the first place or that alot of people disagree with you all.

Why on earth are people saying Chaos and Disorder??

"I Will" and "Into the Light" ALONE warrant the purchase of this disc..

Hmm...

My personal least favorite?? Probably the Symbol album. That gets way too much credit in my opinion.
Falling leaves will appear to them.. Like slow-motion rain..

If you are a fan of Prince's "rock" side you will probably enjoy Chaos And Disorder. I think that especially on the first side it features some of Prince's best guitar playing on album. Kamasutra is a horse of a different colour. It's kind of new agey instrumental music. If you really dig Prince's instrumental albums you may like it but I doubt it.

For me so much of Emancipation is littered with sub-par material...songs that sounded dated even when the cd was released. Most of Rave, too with it's saving grace being ILUBEDTUA. But my least favorite cd has to be MPLSound. It makes New Power Soul sound like a funky masterpiece. I do love Lotusflow3r though.

I'm a big defender of Emancipation so I would be curious to know which songs, in your opinion, sounded dated when it was released.

With Dirty Mind being the first album that I purchased, I can't think of any Prince album that did not have heavy rotation at least for a year after its release. In fact, Lotus/MPLS is still my primary means of music. And usually after a year, I begin to listen to all my Prince music in a chronological rotation, For You to the present. But, right now, still just listening to Lotus/MPLS everyday. Planet Earth and 3121 could have contained more music, but I don't skip them when its their turn to be played. Now that I think about it, I guess I don't have a least favorite Prince album because there is not an album that I can't or don't want to hear.

For me songs like Mr. Happy,We Gets Up,Right Back Here,Da Da Da...and the title track represents sounds that sound plastic and hollow. I also feel the cover songs are overdone. Many other songs are just average to me.

There are only a handful of songs from disc 1 and 3 that I enjoy though several songs from disc 2 do appeal to me.

In these hard economic times world wide at present, Da Da Da is fits right in right now. Mr. Happy and We Gets Up should have been kept in his vault.
