Are there any other artists with such an extensive following?

I know of no other artists -- except for maybe Elvis, the Beatles, some classical composers and, to a lesser degree, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin -- that have such an extensive following that fans actually have as much knowledge and vitality around unreleased stuff as released! lol

The mythology surrounding Prince and his work is exceptional, and I wonder if you guys know of other artists that command/have commanded such enigma, research and analysis?

I'm thinking MAYBE James Brown, but 4 the most part, I don't think anyone can top Prince in this category (or any category 4 that matter)!

hehe lol

The only other artists I could think of with a fanbase in any way similar to Prince's would be Elvis or The Beatles.

No matter how long I'm a fan, I will never stop pondering the people who laugh hysterically when I tell them I'm a Prince fan! WTF?! biggrin

Hi, kids. I'm back. Howcome nobody mentioned Pearl Jam. They can sell records without any means of advertisement. Q: How do they do it? A: FANS!

(although, personally, I do not like the band, I'm just stating facts)

There are many bands with larger fan bases than Prince: U2, Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews, Beatles, Pearl Jam, etc.

Prince definitely has a healthy fan base though, and I've always been glad, because it's led to a lot of bootlegs being released.

Miles Davis. Though overall the age demographic of his fanbase is older.

let's not forget jimmy buffett... parrottheads are fanatics of the highest order...

buffett has:
- 6 gold records
- 6 platinum records
- 1 quadruple platinum record
- 1 sextuple platinum records
- and the biggest selling boxset of all-time...

his entire 90s output consists of gold & platinum records(even his friggin christmas album)...

and the man only has 1 hit... not even a number one hit... omg

each of his sell-out tours rank among the highest grossing (generally somewhere in the top 10)...

i'd say that rivals prince's fanbase... or, fambase, i should say...

VERY true. And now that I think of it, his fans are somewhat like Grateful Dead fans. I didn't even know Buffett had a box set!

"boats, beaches, bars, & ballads"...

it's a 4 disc set... as you might have imagined by the title, each disc covers one of those aspects...

it includes the best box set book i've ever seen..

62 pages, full color, written by jimmy... "the parrothead handbook"...

it's broken up into chapters about different things... the final chapter includes buffett's explanations of each of the songs on the box set... very nice... lots of pictures, too...

with all of the KISS merchandise in my house, i can't believe i forgot them...

i remember my first KISS concert... i thought i was a huge KISS fan, until i saw people not just wearing makeup, but the complete damn costume... i don't even know how much time and money people how to sink into replicating those costumes, but i was impressed...

In addition to my previous question, "who the hell is Dave Mathews?"

I must also now ask who the hell is Jimmy Buffett?

I am presuming they sound more interesting than their names suggest?

not with dave matthews, however... dave matthews makes me wanna drive a stake through my head...

jimmy buffett & the coral reefer band, on the other hand...
booty!... makes me wanna go back home to the island, shake my booty, sit on a beach, & just chill 8)...

"i want to be there
i want to go back down and die beside the sea there
with a tin cup for a chalice
fill it up with good red wine,

maybe it's because i only know "Margueritaville"... but Buffet gives me the same feeling as Matthews.

"margaritaville" is but a small part of jimmy's repertoire... not only is it not his best song, it's not even the best song on the "changes in lattitudes, changes in attitudes" album from whence it came...

his style is probably not for everyone... but despite all of his quirky songs, he is a great writer of heartfelt lyrics... "wonder why you ever go home" is one of my favorites...

years grow shorter, not longer
the more you've been on your own
feelings for moving grow stronger
so you wonder why you ever go home
wonder why you ever go home

people are moving so quickly
and humor's in need of repair
sme occupations and same obligations
they've really got nothing to share
like driving around with no spare.

river gets deeper not shallow
the further you move down the stream
i'm wondering if i can keep her
as i race to keep up with my dreams
how they shine and glitter and gleam

years grow shorter, not longer
the more you've been on your own
feelings for moving grow stronger
so you wonder why you ever go home
wonder why you ever go home

but then again, it is altogether true that jimmy buffett is not for everyone... he seems to be a particular favorite among those from the coastal regions of the southeast (US)...

Being in the bootleg scene, eye can honestly say The Beatles have a much more extensive catalog than prince could ever produce.. It may be because there are 4 people in the band, and 3 of them constantly wrote music.. but give or take, The Beatles top the bootleg world..

Prince would be in the top 5, no doubt..
