I think he just likes to change his color schemes up. No idea why he has abandoned the Clouds altogether, though.

I'm glad he did. There was a screechy and dry sound to all of them. As great as SOTT movie was, that guitar made my ears bleed. "Purple Rain"'s solo was done on the Hohner Prinz originally. But in concert, he'd use that Cloud guitar, and it was just horrible. His symbol guitars have a good sound to them, and the Hohner definitely does.

The cloud LOOKED good, but it sounded like an electric ukulele.

The Clouds had a very distinct sound like no other guitar he had and I loved the efx Prince was able to achieve with them. The same with the Auerwald Model C which he used during the Nude Tour and in Graffiti Bridge.

Well...I dunno about "most known guitar ever"

I'm sure this one could give it a run for it's money in the "well known" department...

It is. The Cloud is designed and constructed as a 3/4 sized guitar to fit Prince's small frame.

That's why Prince shouldn't use a strat. It makes him look like a toddler. I keep waiting for a roady to run out and help him up after he's fallen over from the weight of it.

It sounded great. Prince only used the Hohner because the Cloud hadn't been built yet. If he had it, I'm 100% positive he would've used it. He used it on A LOT of songs in that era when he got it.

Those Strats look like ironing boards strapped onto Prince.

And let's not forget Brian May's iconic home-made guitar:

Or ZZ Top's sheepskin guitars:

Or Gene Simmon's Axe bass:

Or Angus Young's Gibson SG:

Or Sir Paul's Violin bass:

Or anyone who's ever had the balls to use this:

The Hohner is full-sized. Same size as a Fender Telecaster on which it is based.

ahh, i see..thanks for the info..but why are the cloud and symbol guitars specified and smaller if he can play regular sized guitars? I mean, speaking as a non musician, i think he plays the hohner very well

Prince has always played standard guitars with no problem, but the Clouds and Symbols were custom made just for him, so they were tailored to exacting specifications based on his body type. He could wear a suit off the rack, but a tailored one would fit better.

I feel that he is afraid of breaking is symbol and clouds ... That is why he never throws them up after he walks off the stage . Plus whatever he plays ...he rules with it.

Funny that you mention that. I saw Prince slip and fall during a performance once and he was so pissed that he threw his Gold Symbol guitar down on stage. I'm surprised that it didn't break. After a retuning, he played it again later in the show.

He had a white symbol back in the day, and he threw it up and the lower horn broke off. In some pics of the white symbol you can see where it's been glued.

I sooo agree. Especially in the live version of sweet thing with him and chaka kahn god it was making me feel bad i had physical pain. Those guitars are so damn screechy. Even in the rave dvd when he's playing purple house the intro is annoying. Such an unnatural sound

I am so glad I'm not the only that noticed that. It has almost NO sustain at all. Of course, he may play with a pretty heavy noise gate.
