SPIN 25th Anniversary of Purple Rain - Jellybean said WHAT? Since there is no living thread about the SPIN 25th year anniversary of 'Purple Rain' edition, I thought I would mention Jellybean's comments here...
It was a nice article, with a great mix of former Prince associates... essentially each paragraph is a quote from a different person. WELL... I'm stunned no-one has mentioned this, and I used the search function, which EVERYONE should do... Jellybean flat out DISSED Prince hard. He said something about how many Rock & Roll Hall of famers pay close attention 2 people using their material, images, etc. He then says that Prince does, and he wanted 2 call Prince out harder, but then said he had 2 be careful, because he still hangs with Morris Day, and that he'd still have 2 deal with Prince, whom he then calls a "PUNK ASS". 4 some reason, I wasn't aware that there was that much animosity coming from Jellybean toward Prince. Did those of U who got the magazine find that a bit odd, and out of place from the rest of the interview quips? Were U aware of this animosity? Not sayin' it surprises me, but it took me off guard a bit. PEACE. . [Edited 6/30/09 7:55am] "He's a musician's musician..." | |

20+ years is a long time to hang onto that Shockadelica nonsense. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. | |

No surprise. I can believe that Prince is a punk ass. I love his music and performance on stage though, they can have all that drama, I really don't care. Besides, we have all been a punk ass to someone somewhere sometime. We are all so full of here | |

I read that, and I believe that was Jellybean talking. He was introduced on the first page or so of the article with his full name.
I don't remember seeing Jesse's name, but I could be mistaken. I'll have to go back and look. He is exactly who we thought he was | |

Oftentimes, when someone feels hurt by another, they feel anger and animosity, and may resort 2 calling names. U can't assume a derogatory name 2 be correctly assigned. "He's a musician's musician..." | |

The following was posted when I assumed it was Jesse Johnson that dissed Prince... It has been confirmed that it was Jellybean Johnson...
----- So even though Jesse seems 2 be alluding 2 Prince's tight control over his material, it could be several things... A) The "Shockadelica" experience. B) The story they mention in the article about abducting Jesse, tying him up, and Prince taking his place onstage w/The Time. C) Prince's ownership of "The Time". D) Prince playing all guitar on most every Time song an nearly every Time album. Thoughts? All of the above, perhaps? [Edited 6/30/09 7:57am] "He's a musician's musician..." | |

I don't remember seeing Jesse's name, but I could be mistaken. I'll have to go back and look. Nope. It was Jesse. Alright, I have the magazine in front of me. On page 54, Jellybean Johnson (drummer, the Time) is introduced. All subsequent quotes following just have Johnson. I would assume that Johnson is referring to Jellybean since I don't see Jesse introduced. What makes you sure it's Jesse? He is exactly who we thought he was | |

So NOW we have something perhaps even more interesting, as Prince says on "Ol Skool Company", "Jellybean wishin'..."
This is when he's giving props 2 drummers he likes, so this assumes that by Prince saying "Jellybean wishin", it would mean Prince is saying he ain't got it, or that Jellybean has been on guitar instead of drums mostly. It's probably the latter, because Jellybean was on POINT on the skins. Thoughts? . [Edited 6/30/09 8:57am] "He's a musician's musician..." | |

I love prince, but can't possibly defend the things he's done. He's lucky he got off with name calling rather than getting a good old fashioned ass whipping. Just shows he wasn't hanging around a particularly rough crowd. | |

Maybe this stems from the Family stuff? (Them not being able to use the name). | |

Jellybean Johnson had nothing to do with the "Shockadelica nonsense" - that was Jesse Johnson's thing. Jesse Johnson was not involved in that SPIN article at all. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it
listen to The Replacements - its good for the soul | |

But Genesia had said that when we were thinking it was Jesse... I've edited as much as I could! We now know it was Jellybean. "He's a musician's musician..." | |

i can't really decide how i feel as a musician myself-the way Prince 'allegedly' and actually does treat band members etc. I admire him the way he switches bands and stuff-does his own thing in a big way
(though i'd HATE to work for or with someone like him-not in a music sense-more the only one view that counts sense) BUT i think i really hate the Wendy and Lisa stuff. Man they are two superb-well balanced individuals. I could listen to them chat forever-and he STILL gives them grief.....He killed The Revolution Fell out with Eric Leeds-and the way Wendy says it-when your out with Prince-your TRULY out-like you don't exist anymore. Thats pretty nasty and childish-and suprising for such an intelligent clever chap and then again-breaking up The Revolution-mad-but sooooo brave. He's kinda hard to be mad at for long but we haven't worked for him | |

no we haven't worked for him but unless the people that have were all quoted incorrectly, then he's not a very good boss. I am aware that a leader has to be manipulative and contolling but I hate when this leads to just being a corrupt individual, which it almost always does. Prince, although not a child star, has still been out of touch with the real world from the time he was 18 or so. Alot of the lessons most of us get, he never got, his talent and fame have given him the luxury to have his way most of the time. That's not good for anyone. | |

As a musician, that would be the ideal 4 me, if I wanted 2 learn and play other people's music. It seems 2 me that Prince has created more freedom, musically, 2 his band members than most single artists ever have. "He's a musician's musician..." | |

don't get me wrong-i'm not knocking him-i think he knows what he's doing-but that relationship he builds with you-you'd feel on top of the world-then he takes it away as quick as he gave it-and he's gone.....Right out of you life.....Now that would be hard to take..... | |

last word on page 59? and is there anywhere online that I can read the article? [Edited 6/30/09 22:40pm] | |

Yeah Jellybean would sure say it he's spoke of things in person which would bring concern, but not going to repeat the conversation. What I will say is he will tell you something and not hold back! | |

He's kinda hard to be mad at for long but we haven't worked for him The break up of the Revolution when I think about the loss that came about it, and even Prince 'repented' of dismissing Wendy & Lisa, He wanted to keep BrownMark on bass, of course the extended Revolution members became the SOTT band:Mico Eric Atlanta Bliss Gregory & Wally Sheila E joined on drums but that's one of the bittersweet concerning the Revolution breakup, because Sheila had a very good album:Sheila E that was not worked out because she was pulled, And that album really outshown Romance 1600 I just don't think Prince mananaged Uptown well from the personal relationships to the business, he had something great happening. That's why there are those Family Jams and why Sheila E believed in it enough to have that Prince Family gathering. He could have had original Time, Vanity 6, the Revolution, Sheila E, the Family, Mazarati, Jill Jones, Madhouse can you imagine if he had these groups still working with him under Paisley Park? | |
