duggalolly said: ATWIAD was my first proper Prince album... for me the intro to "Condition of the Heart" is part of what I love about the song. Hearing the piano playing lead me to get interested in stuff like Joni Mitchell's "Blue," which I might not have listened to otherwise.
"Hello" was recorded long after the album was completed, and never could've made it onto the album (it could've been released on "Parade," but didn't fit the movie at all-- which might be why it was released as a b-side). As for outtakes, songs like "Pop Life" and "Paisley Park" were recorded around the same time as "When Doves Cry"-- early '84-- so most of Prince's unreleased music from that period would probably be lumped in with the Purple Rain era. The only outtakes I know of that relate directly to the album are the alternate versions of the title track. U sure Hello was recorded after the album was completed? The situation happened during the PR era/We R the World time frame

We are the world happened a few months later, and then Prince wrote "Hello" in response.

For some its a classic, or highly touted because of W & L's involvement, but for a 9 song album, it was lacking much, the songs i don't like are almost unlistenable.
Condition of the Heart - achingly long intro demotivates me to want to hear the actual song, which turns out to be anti-climatic Temptation - i like the HARD rock approach, but it was overdone, vocals indiscernible The Ladder - o-KAY but.. i love Raspberry, Pop Life, Paisley, America, Tambourine and the title track is ok but this album NEEDED She's Always in My Hair to actually be ON it, to account for these missteps. it was gr8 artistic curveball so ppl wouldn't put him in a "box", but i was surprised that despite the total number of songs that i like out of 9, the album felt unfulfilling and overblown i agree with condition of the hearts intro-it took me til a few yrs ago to get past the intro and appreciate this song. Shes always in my hair is one of my fav prince songs-period. The great thing about being a p fan back in the day was we were very spoilt with the quality of his b sides. And i think most orgers know what i think about rb I was going to tear strips when i saw this thread title but changed my mind- u made some valid pts seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

It pulls you in very slowly, and the beating heart and melody sway like the wind. The album is just perfect the way it is. The b sides are great, but this album still finds me without them. to those who think this album is over rated,
give it some more spins - you will love this album after 10-12 listenings. As already mentioned: those 12 inch versions really spoiled us, completely amazing, classic Prince music. Prince 4Ever.

meow85 said: This album can not be overrated. If anything, it's not appreciated enough since it received such a lukewarm reception post-PR and is so little-known outside the fan community. Though I suppose since that seems to have been Prince's goal with doing this musical 180 that that's not really a bad thing. It is, IMO, one of those rare, perfect albums that only comes along once in a long time. I don't listen to it much, but when I do I never feel the need to skip a track.
[Edited 6/29/09 13:19pm] Excellent point. Also... how can it be overrated, when out of all of Prince's albums, it was the most returned, and multiple copies could be found in the cut-out/used bins. Love that album. Always did. "He's a musician's musician..."

Me and my friends didn't like listening to America (aside from the record stop start intro), and I found the version of the Ladder to be too produced, as well as I found Temptation to be a bit too long (but I love the theatrical stuff after the song)
So... put on "She's Always in My Hair", make "America" the b-side only track, reduce Temptation, and maybe put "Teacher Teacher" on there. When was that made? Also could edit down the intro of "Condition of the Heart", and recompress the overall mix of "Paisley Park" so that some of the background stuff is less subdued in comparison to the kickdrum and snare (same thing for the title track). I think "Tambourine" is perfect as is. Also, put in a little bit of that 12" "Raspberry Beret" intro... it's exciting. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

YOUR MOM is way overrated!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I agree that 'Temptation' is too long, it seems like the only 'filler' track to me. He could have cut it down and made a cool, tight, blues track from it. Even still, I think the album as a whole is a classic.

My third favourite Prince album, definitely NOT overrated.
Condition of the heart is my favouriteP song (although ask me that in six months and I may say something different, too too many to chose from). I love She is always in my hair, but don't think it would be appropriate on the album. It's perfect, so just let it be..

this one was a grower on me. Hated it when it came out (besides Pop Life and RB). But over the years I have learned to love it. Now I get in moods where its the only Prince album I want to listen to. The title track is great as is Tambourine. Agree that rockier version of the title track is better. Also love that live video version of America. Made me appreciate that song even more.

I it from start to finish: Raspberry Beret (New Mix 6:37) Paisley Park (Remix 6:59) She's Always In My Hair (New Mix 6:33) Pop Life (UK Extended Version 9:08) Pop Life (Fresh Dance Mix 6:20) Hello (Fresh Dance Mix 6:15) America (21:39) those 12 Inch versions are some of Prince's finest material, That's the problem with this album .It was rushed out and really not completed. It's not a great album and any of his new stuff is better. Now the good stuff on the album is all time. Paisley Park,Raspberry Beret,America,The Ladder is primo material. Add She's Always In My Hair and add Roadhouse Garden or Wonderful Ass and remove one of the weak songs and you have a winner. [Edited 7/6/09 19:22pm]

please Mulefunk.. do you like any of his new stuff better ? don't tell me you like Musicology / 3121 / Planet Earth better than the fine album: Around The World In A Day ??? I simply don't understand critisism of this great & funky album... ATWIAD.... Prince 4Ever.

To each his own.
Like I said Paisley Park,Raspberry Beret, America, The Ladder,She's Always In My Hair stands with the best he's done. ATWIAD,Condition Of The Heart (great song out of place on this album),Tamborine,Temptation are B-sides at best.

ATWIAD,Condition Of The Heart (great song out of place on this album),Tamborine,Temptation are B-sides at best. People have to get the concept, this is one of his most cohesive albums When you take in the purpose behind the album and the concept of Paisley Park then all the songs fit:Around the World in a Day(fits with PP's concept) when you take in the characters in the park, those on the album cover all the songs even B sides fit into, all kinds of people come to the park for different reasons from broken hearts: Condition of the Heart lonely/lust: Tambourine, Temptation, Girl stardom: Pop Life, Hello religous/sexual conflict: Temptation, the Ladder national fears and social problems: America, Paisley Park utopia:ATWIAD, Paisley Park, love & friendship:She's Always In My Hair, Girl, Raspberry Beret Condition of the Heart was like a rough draft of the Under the Cherry Moon concepts/movie, one of his most beautiful compositions Like Uptown & Erotic City... Paisley Park is another part of Prince's world When U get 2 Erotic City, go Uptown, make a right on Alphabet St the last house is number 3121 and there is Paisley Park

Oh yes I love Pop Life and it should have been included in my list of keepers from the album.
Many in the era thought Prince took a day off with ATWIAD period and didn't return until SOTT. In fact many thought that ATWIAD and Parade both fit poorly in that era. Again I think POP LIFE( ), Raspberry Beret, America,Paisley Park, and She's Always in My Hair are alltime classics. I will also say that even though this album is not one of my personal favorites it is heads and shoulders above anything that is released then and now. Proving again that Prince on an off day is 99% better than most on their best day.
