nod It has the unfortunate luck of being a flawless song on a flawed album.

Shouldn't that make it stand out even more? confuse

No, because people turn off Emancipation before it gets to The Love We Make. lol

He's gone his whole career trying to write something as epic and Earth-shattering as Purple Rain, and he's finally realized it can't be done.

Huh?...Prince went his "whole career" trying to write something as good as Purple Rain, eh? lol...you might want to reword that part wink

See: Gold, Last December

What I'm moreso referring to is that while he's been prolific and brilliant post-1984, Purple Rain remains his magnum opus.

Jughead.

It remains misunderstood to this day.
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

It's the "whole career" part that I thought needed rewriting lol lol...the way you wrote it, it sounds like Prince NEVER wrote anything as good as "Purple Rain" wink

pro·found (pr-found, pr-)
adj. pro·found·er, pro·found·est
1. Situated at, extending to, or coming from a great depth; deep.
2. Coming as if from the depths of one's being: profound contempt.
3. Thoroughgoing; far-reaching: profound social changes.
4. Penetrating beyond what is superficial or obvious: a profound insight.
5. Unqualified; absolute: a profound silence.
hmmmmm....
Last December and Sometimes It Snows would fit.
There are a good number of his songs that qualify, depending...not La La Hee Hee, or Raspberry Beret obviously. But I still don't see Purple Rain as "earth-shattering". Colorful, yes.
U'r Gonna C Me..."..you're the reason I took a rope & lassoed the moon..." DAMN! Whoever THIS is...that's saying a whole lot right there, isn't it?

falloff And P is still p.o'd that it hasn't received its due... *sigh*

Okay, what was I gonna say? Oh yeah...I'm not gonna post a song yet because a flood of them came to mind. Thing is, what I recall are profound parts of songs that may or may not be profound taken as a whole.

The first example I remember would be "I Wanna Be Your Lover"... "I wanna be your mother and your sister too". It was the initial sign to me that Prince was championing a different attitude towards the Man-Woman boogie (to borrow from Q-Tip, lol). But, this was a poppy dance track that made it to American Bandstand; atypical of most of the 'profound' choices I've seen so far, or what generally comes to mind. To me, a song like this that could chart, move ya booty, and then make you go 'hmm' is just as profound. "7" is another example...totally unusual theme for a song that did well on the charts.

Know what I mean?

Some would say that Purple Rain is not even the best song on the album of the same name.

I'd be one of those.

relationships: If I Was Your girlfriend, very well thought out song about the search and need for REAL Intimacy. Close second: Forever in my Life

Spirituality: The Ladder

Social: America since I've always thought this to be very tongue in cheeck and clever criticism, More subtle then on Sign Of the Times...

The search for a lover: The One U Wanna C, only for the key line about the nickle and the dime... (okay , it's not really profound but it's very clever)

Prince is very light hearted in his lyrics, very narcissistic.

not that profound, mostly his songs are about "cosmic" love and sex... nothing wrong, I love it,

but I wouldn't say he is that profound.

but he has social awareness (whatever it's called),

America, The Cross, Sign O' The Times.
