I don’t think this has ever been done before, I recently came across a few prince videos* from VH1’s Pop-Up Video. Anyhow, I would like to share these interesting facts/trivia about prince and his videos that were mention on this show. I don’t know if they are 100% accurate but here there are: enjoy

TMBGITW:
1: Shot on and around valentine's day in Paisley Park
2: wanted this video to feature ‘undiscovered beauties’ from around the world
3: placed an anonymous personal ad in major American and foreign publications
4: Thousands of women responded, 100 were flown to MPLS => 9 made the final cut
5: selected the beauties that seemed most ‘natural’
6: He wanted to reveal their inner beauty by having them live out their fantasies on screen
7: Beauty 1= experience a ‘fairy-tale’ wedding
Beauty 2= nightclub singer
Beauty 3= Olympic gold medalist
Beauty 4= for her son to witness his own birth
Beauty 5= stand-up comedienne
Beauty 6= film director
Beauty 7= racial harmony among all her students
Beauty 8= to win a oscar
Beauty 9= to be the first female president
8: Fantasy Island’s Tattoo was only 16 inches shorter than
9: While still in junior high enrolled himself in a song copyrighting class
10: Beauties 8 & 9 didn’t answer the personal ads, they were friends of his

When Doves Cry:
1: The doves were ‘guided’ to the ground by bird seeds scattered on the floor (intro)
2: His directional debut
3: Prince also made one of his own costumes
He refashioned a pair of his underwear into a ‘loincloth’ for this scene (tub)
4: The underwear was later auctioned off on the set, a crew member bought it for $20
5: A crew member landed an important role in the next scene (intro the whole band)
Dove-thrower (door opens)
6: Split mirror= Prince and ‘the Kid’


Raspberry Beret:
1: The following video contains ‘cutting-edge’ special effects and ‘sophisticated’ animation for 1985
2: The original idea= the animated story of a girl with a raspberry beret
3: Prince decided he shouldn’t be in the video because people were 'sick of him'
4: 2 animators were hired to put together an entire video of the animated story
5: They worked around the clock for 2 months to complete the video
6: They were editing their work when prince showed up at the facility-unannounced
7: Prince didn’t say anything to them, but his bodyguard did
"Get out"
8: Prince took the animators’ work and inter-cut it with the band footage he had filmed himself-in secret
9: Prince said he "stands on his own" and doesn’t like being compared to others
10: Prince wasn’t an experienced video editor- he 'experimented' with a lot of different buttons
Including the "chrome-key", it allowed prince to put himself into the animation
11: He liked the ‘noisy’ and ‘torn’ quality of his finished version of the video
So did the critics- it was called "technically-flawed but creativity significant"
The animators had a different reaction to it- they laughed
12: Prince has said he didn’t mind when wendy sometimes laughed at him on stage
He felt wendy made him 'look good' by smiling when they sang together
13: Prince’s friends said his fame often isolated him from others


7:
1: Shot over 4 months at Paisley Park
2: They shot overnight from 11pm to 5am because that’s when feels most creative
3: At 8, mayte was featured on 'that’s incredible' for her ability to balance a sword on her head
4: The video’s concept is a lover’s vow to vanquish the 7 guardians of his beloved
5: wrote this song while fascinated with the Biblical theme of 7’s

1999:
1: Filmed in 4 hours at MPLS Armory building
2: None of the band members played instruments in this song- prince played them all
3: Prince spent 3 hours deciding how the video should look before telling the director

It was definitely done. In late 1997, they did a Pop up Video of Prince's stuff, as well as a Video Timeline show. I still have it on VHS.

I just had a eureka moment. I could never figure out why Prince had a Red Cloud Guitar made for the TMBGITW promo. Duh, the whole promotion was built around Valentines Day. I completely forgot about that.

Prince never took delivery on the Red Cloud Guitar. It was auctioned off on eBay. That thing was beautiful.
