What if Prince was ugly? If Prince wasn't so attractive, handsome, or pretty would some of us still go stir crazy over him? Let's say he still made the same music but his looks were similar to Bob Dylan's as an example. Are his looks to his benefit?

His looks are to his benefit with a large number of his fans, so --yes, they are important to his actual fanbase size.
me personally, I don't find him attractive, and even get a bit creeped out or wierded out by him from time to time, especially now that he's 50 and wearing the same wig he wore 10 years ago--it's starting to feel James Brownish. But I've always liked Prince visually on stage. He's stunning, and not because he's attractive but because he commands the stage. But I feel the same way about Springsteen and Dylan. | |

So I don't understand the attraction to him. But Prince is so much more than his looks to me. The guy is unlike any other. If he'd let his hair just go gray naturally and stop layering his makeup on, he'd probably look less creepy, but even so....it doesn't matter | |

He was also not yet 30 I don't think, so it worked well for him. His Act I and Act II looks were interesting too in that he was using his outfits as advertisements for his shows. Once the musicology years came around, the look went from theatrical to a more subdued theatrical look. He has hits and he has misses, like anyone. But as he ages, he's still wearing his makeup the same and his hair the same color. It'll start looking really unnatural or strange soon. I liked the LoveSexy era even though I make fun of it. | |

I agree with Tame about him being attractive inside. He would have to be for many a fan to find his antics amusing. I mean if Seal or that dude from Blues Traveler dressed like P or wore that kind of make up or pretended to be dating twin tranny looking chicas then we'd go WTF? But there's something about Prince's aura and energy and quirkiness that makes us accept all that nonsense. So yeah maybe if Prince was ugly it would be irrelevant.
Oh wait, good musical talent, a sexy voice and the ability to dance really well can make anybody look good. So maybe Prince really is ugly and we just can't see it.
