Welcome to day one of seven about TheKing662's relationship with Dirty Mind (and his psp).

To answer your next upcoming questions about that album:

"Yes"

"When You Were Mine and Sister"

"I don't think so"

"Indeed, that song is cool"

"No"

I like it because it changes direction from the first two albums. The first two albums sound a bit generic, where Dirty Mind has a very distinct original sound.
Alot of these song seem to really take off live as compared to the album version too. Maybe if you heard these songs live (In person or a recording) youd like them alot more.

Dirty Mind, Head, When you were mine, and Uptown are all firm favourites of mine,
although I must say my favourite list is about 100 songs long now!
cool

You would get it, if you lived through it! Dirtymind was masterful at the time; now it is difficult to explain!

Because it's still his rawest album to date and it was the point in time where Prince found his new sound. The first two albums were a product of the seventies. "Dirty Mind" marked an 80's manifesto. The rude boy image emerged. It was the first time we saw the trench coat and bikini briefs. All of this was a deliberate shift from the r&b tag of the first two records. There were some new wave elements creeping into his sound as well. If you really must know, it's just a brilliant fucking album from a black kid from the North side of Minneapolis!

I agree. You really had to be there in 1980 to "get" it.Back then, this was one of the most provocative albums and people were really shocked/intrigued by it.

It's an OK album, but far from great.

Unlike later albums, it's not easily enjoyed in, and of, itself. The fact that it struggles to have any relevance beyond the context of the time it was released, lets it down immensely.

It's the album that marked the identity of Prince. Every song is in its demo version and this gives 'em the raw element which to me, is rather cool and enjoyable. Given this, every song could be rearranged and reworked in a live version, which gives Prince a virtually infinite range of possibilities.

It's the very FIRST Prince album.

I love Dirty Mind madly, from start to finish, cool

great music, beautiful ballads, great rock, and funk: the production is damn fine.. raw, simple and edgy.

Rolling Stone had:

- Purple Rain @ #2
- 1999 @ # 16
- Dirty Mind @ #18
- Sign O' The Times @ #74

on their 1989 list of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties.

Oh, by the way....

"Sure it does"

"Do it all night"

"Gayle could never do that"

"I think it is"

"I don't think it is"

MrMul

LOVE this album - its definately in my top 5 Prince albums, and I didnt live through it (well, I was 1 year old at the time).

I love the raw sound, and the whole image he and the band had at the time. But mostly the songs are just great, sparse, fierce and funky. And way ahead of its time. I'm a big dance music fan, and the beat of the title track is like a precursor to techno music. My favorite moments are the synth solo in Head, the repeated guitar chord in the bridge of Gotta Broken Heart Again, the bass line of Party Up, and all of When U Were Mine.

Such a brilliant album. biggrin

this is a consistent and brilliant album.

consistent in that the same music instruments are used and played by prince throughout. it's not about technology, just about raw talent. it has a dingy, dirty, basement sound and is challenging to listeners then and even now.

brilliant because the songs are excellent compositions and hold up on their own despite the lack of production.

Seriously though, you're looking at it from a jaded perspective. You know what Prince has accomplished after "Dirty Mind". For most of us that love "Dirty Mind" there was no after to compare it to, only the before.

Compared to the 2 albums that came before it, "Dirty Mind" was pure GENIUS! It was raw, uncut, daring, edgy, sexy and hard hitting all at the same time from start to finish. It is what separated Prince from the rest of the pack and set him on his course for super stardom.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I'm another that wasn't a fan at the time and Dirty Mind is defintely my 2nd least favourite of the first 4 albums.

For best to worst I have them:

Controversy
Prince
Dirty Mind
For You

Although for me it's very close between the bottom two.

However...

Whenever I've heard songs from DM played live, I've always loved them. Just something about the album versions that don't really grab me.

A lot of people wish they could buy thier lover a dirty mind. Uptown, Head Partyup. These are some classic Prince Jams. I put this album my sleezy, sexy funky, spunky side of my collection box. This whole album is solid gold. Lyrical Spunk to the max. The other songs are no slouches either. The lyrics on this album coupled with the inventive new style of music is dead on it.

I like it but I don't love it. I mostly love some of the songs seperately rather than the album as a whole.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Dirty Mind is massively important, as in a sense it's the first 'real' Prince album.
It marked a radical change in direction from the first 2 albums, and really saw
the "Prince" who conquered the 80's come into being. This is where the first
seeds of the genius, experimental, genre-crossing artist we know and love
were sown.

agreed, it is career defining. It's impact is so strong that Prince has spent the last 10 years trying to get rid of that image.
