It's originally from 1982, I think.

After finding out that it was originally from 1982, it sounded as if the song had the same style as Little Red Corvette. Btw, does anybody know if the basic tracks from the 1982 version of "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" were used on the version we all know so well?

Wow, I never knew this. Listening to it again though, it sounds obvious. Glad he went with LRC for 1999, but this song would have rocked on 1999 "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

Interesting stuff - this song sounded SO timely in '87!
I remember reviews saying that he was parodying the kind of songs that Billy Ocean and Lionel Ritchie were topping charts with, and showing them how it should really be done... "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"
