Am I wrong? Now, outtakes are a whole different thing but I think WB would be well within their rights to reissue what they have with a bonus disc including 12" mixes and other stray tracks that were originally released on WB. If it is true that starting in 2013 Prince will start getting the rights to these albums back I would expect WB to reissue each album before that happens.
I seem to remember that they can re-issue his old stuff as it was but can't re-master it without his permission. While still speculation, that is probably right. The thing is WB only owns those rights comprised under copyright that were transferred to them by contract, which are a lot of rights, but not all. Prince's early contracts most probably do not contain a provision covering "digital remasters" or something similar, simply because at that time digital remaster technology didn't exist yet. Hence, the right to make digital remasters couldn't have been transferred to WB, which is why WB needs his permission to do that. That's about the only thing he can hold against them, the only way to keep a little control over "his masters", so that's what he uses. | |
