I recall that GB the movie was not supposed to have Prince as the star only as the soundtrack and when Madonna,Janet Jackson, and Kim Bassinger backed out then Prince was forced to act. If you watch the movie and see Prince it's obvious that his heart really was not into "it".

Was Janet really supposed to be a part of it? I recall that in 1987,there were all these rumors that the reunited Time and Janet would be doing a movie together, but is this the same project that Prince was working on?

As bad as 'Graffiti Bridge' is,the original 1987 script is even worse disbelief In this version of the movie,Madonna and Cat are the co-stars,fighting for Prince's affection.Prince's character is known as 'Camille',Madonna's character is known as 'Ruby'.Horrible, horrible, horrible idea!

This was the movie that was supposed to be starring Janet Jackson and the Time. I think when Janet did not commit Prince added himself and Kim Bassinger to the movie. When Kim left then you get Ingrid.

Hell Madonna saw the hand writing on the wall and said Hell no early.

P.S.: If ya'll think this movie is bad how many of you saw RunDmC's Tougher Than Leather. This movie was even worse than GB. The movie just stops . No ending .No explanation. Nothing .

I remember before this movie came out,RUN DMC were saying that they didn't like 'Krush Groove' (their previous film) because it was "soft".They expected 'Tougher Than Leather' to turn them into movie stars.

There was no saving this movie. To make it better, you'd have to blow it up and start from scratch.

I love Prince... yet... this was the WORST movie I have ever seen. Bar none. It's right down there with Zoolander, Gigli and Jason IX: Jason Visits Outer Space and then takes Manhattan... or whatever that crap was called.

The soundtrack was pretty good, but the movie was just hideous! I remember seeing people yawn in the theatre, and just flat out laugh... not at something that was funny, but at the whole concept of the movie.

Well said. I saw GB at the theater on opening day and never watched it again...it is THAT bad. I am just not going to put myself through that again. Even the performance scenes didn't work somehow. I don't know how he screwed those up.

... One small idea: Put "Bob George" in it. Its what he was really trying to get across in GB anyway... the whole structure of the Brilliant Lovesexy tour was based on the tension of be Good vs. be a selfish, horny prick ... and choosing good via a spiritual awakening.

Use "Bob George" as either a way to further demonize Morris (have him record the vox), or better yet as an insight to the inner conflict of the Kid. The tension of "does he want to do the right thing, or the selfish thing?" established in PR made the Kid interesting. Nowhere in GB does the KId want to do the WRONG BAD SELFISH THING, he's just too pussy to do the right thing because.....wait for it.....awwwww, He's sad and confused. That made me not root for him vs. Morris, but just bitch slap him and tell him to wake the "F" up.

I can see putting a scene of him slapping down Aura while she comes to visit him in a completely darkened studio (maybe a few candles or blacklights) . He is playing the "Bob George" track back listening to the final cut, and what is happening in the scene mirrors what is happening in the song.

How are you going to criticize the cinematography? It's filmed great, just bad sets, bad narrative, and bad humor and acting.

I love the gritty colors and framing of the shots. It's Bill Butler, right? His most famous movie he shot is Jaws.

Prince always chooses the best Directors of Photography for his cinematic projects. He stole one of Scorcese's for Cherry Moon.

Yeah, surprisingly, the performance scenes were disappointing too. That's something that Prince usually excels at! "Elephants And Flowers" is the only exciting performance scene.

"We can Funk" was poorly edited...."Tick,Tick,Bang" is embarrassing disbelief

"New Power Generation" is a poor opening performance scene. He should have opened the film with an amazing, kickass performance of "Can't Stop This Feeling...."

flamethrower + script = much better experience.

Actually, it should have just been released on video as an extended music video release instead of as a movie. All references to this being a Purple Rain sequel should have been axed. It wasn't originally meant to be a sequel and it totally fails as such.

I just watched this movie for the first time last night.
I loved it!!
I liked that there was more choreography in this one.

I think people try too hard to make GB something that it's not. Just accept it for what it is! Prince's movies were never cinematic masterpieces. The acting was always terrible. I think all Prince ever wanted to accomplish was to tell a story with music. And that's what he did. Graffiti Bridge had a nice message, and we all know P was really proud of what he'd created. So no, this movie was not the best film in the technical sense, but the message was positive, simple, and clear.

On a side note:
I immensely enjoyed watching Prince's sexy ass for and hour and a half. That man is too damn fine for his own good. And I miss that beautiful hair! I can't resist a man with great hair. drool3
I could read you poetry and then we could make a story of our own.

When Warners saw the finished film, they wanted to release it straight to video lol They knew that it was a turkey but didn't want to upset Prince,so they went ahead with a theatrical release.I agree with you,it might have worked better as a extended music video release, like 'Three Chains O' Gold'...a companion piece to the album,to better 'explain' the songs.

Based on the early script from 1987,I think that Prince originally wanted 'GB' to be something entirely different but once The Time came on board,he felt pressured to turn it into a sequel.Unfortunately, the film doesn't "work" as a sequel.

'Graffiti Bridge' is a movie project that Prince had been working on since 1987 (maybe earlier). There is an early script from 1987 that is totally different from the film that was released. In this early version, the stars are...

Prince---playing a character named Camille Blue
Madonna---playing a character named Ruthie Washington
Cat---playing a character named Vienna

I assume that his SOTT bandmembers would have also starred in the film.In this early script,Prince (Camille) really likes Vienna (Cat) but soon falls in love with Madonna (Ruthie). The two women are competing for his affection. There is a "graffiti bridge" that features pictures of musicians who have passed away, such as Billie Holiday.Madonna and Prince walk across the bridge several times.

There is another script from 1989 that was co-written with Kim Basinger (Prince's girlfriend at the time). She was actually gonna appear in the movie.I've never seen this script but I have heard that it's just as horrible as the 1987 one, lol. An insider who has seen it claims "It's about a man who goes on a search for God.God just happens to be a tall blonde woman who looks alot like Kim Basinger".

falloff

Prince started shooting the movie in January 1990 so I'm convinced that the final script was a rush job. After Kim left the project,he panicked and quickly came up with the weak script that became the movie we all know.
