Based on your criteria of my choice being the style Prince returns to, I would choose LotusFlow3r. Guitar-based with some funk sprinkled in.

For You is a solid debut but it's not all that exciting to me. Too much disco and balladry going on, and not enough rock/funk.

there are some similarities between the two. listen to "Im Yours" and then to "Dreamer", the same driving, wailing, screaming guitar licks and fuzz funk thrown into both songs, seperated by 30 years.
