While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Old topic. There was a lot of chatter from non Prince followers about Prince's guitar solo during his induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I guess many were not aware of Prince's amazing guitar skills. Initially, I thought the performance was a typical Prince performance because he always performs great. Recently, I've watched the clip and have come to appreciate it. Prince really shines. I've always liked Tom Petty. What's your thought on the performance? Also, should Prince work or perform again with Petty or the Traveling Wilburys?

'traveling prince-burys'?.....sure yeah right

i cant stand Tom Petty but a lot of people called me after that performance and told me i was right about Prince all this time

before that i think most people had not paid attention or either the majority of Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, etc. fans had no interest in Prince before

It's called showmanship which Prince has in abundance. Tom Petty not so much. I guess that's what makes this performance work. cool

Ain't that the truth. I remember the day after this first aired and some people at my work thought he was showing off also. I told them he was just being himself. There were a few doubters that came to work saying," Damn I did not know Prince could play like that."

It was a great performance, but, the whole falling backwards off the stage bit was un-necessary and a bit much. The performance was suppose to be about George Harrison, not Prince. Look at Tom Petty's face when "P" does it. He kinda looks like "What the fuck is he doin?" lol

guitar loved prince's performance, IMHO he out-shined from the rest of the performers. I remember when the video was up on youtube, the majority of the comments were about prince and people commented on how great he is on guitar and his performance cool

A great performance, I like the way he stays back in the shadows and waits till its his moment before he starts all the showmanship.

I would like to see Prince do more of these kind of collaborations with well-established and well-respected artists. Say what you will about Tom Petty, but the guy is talented and he is still very respected in the rock world.

Me too - it is all calculated to genius proportions like most of Prince's performances - especially on a big world stage with other big names. He shows them up without trying to because he is Prince and he is still the baddest mofo on the planet.

And to top it off with throwing his guitar in the air and pimping off stage...if I was there I would have lost my mind.

Exactly, why try to hide it?! If Prince had dumbed down his performance the whole thing would have been ok but not brilliant. And George Harrison's son got a kick out of Prince 'falling' backwards, you can't help but smile when you see his reaction.

Dhani Harrison, on the other hand, loved it. The look on his face is priceless. cool

maybe not exactly, because Prince was also inducted that night, so
the song and performance were for George, but P's solo is totally
justified as he played for George and himself in the same night,
on the same song, during that fantastic solo. nod

Prince conducted himself with a little lack of class in my opinion. I still feel he "showcased" a bit much which included tossing his guitar, then strutting off stage like the " bad motherfucker" that he is, but, that wasn't the time to do that. He didn't even stick around to atleast "show some love" to Dhani, which he was looking for btw.

Yup, and he was looking for him backstage so he could give him a big hug. If George's fam didn't have a problem with it, it doesn't matter.

I don't think Tom Petty would have agreed to do The Superbowl if Prince didn't do it.

personally, I see nothing wrong with Prince's performance. Even if you consider it a tribute what's wrong with celebrating instead of being overly somber.

i thought all these things is what makes prince, "prince"....

I could not see him doing it any other way.....loved the showmanship, Leaning
off the stage while completly shredding (the kid in the back realy luved that).

There was a point where Tom was shaking his head in awww of prince's guitar playing....dude is a bad ass...and that is what seperates him...

Petty loved it as did Harrison's son. I get goose bumps when I watch this & have teared-up on 1 occasion. I had 2 work 12:00 am to 7:00 am that night & had the VCR on record when all of a sudden around 11 pm I awaken as this solo was taking place & couldn't believe what I was seeing. My hero destroying everyone's eyes & ears with that solo.
