...Song's a year long & had been playing 4 months or FOR months Anybody ever which one of these he's alluding to in Joy in Repetition? Of course if its 4, then it is also "for"(months). Just wondering if anyone else has thought about that?

never thought about it, I've always heard "for" but knowing Prince it's probably 4 Just somewhere in the middle,

Well, the lyrics would say "4 months" any way, right?
But I hear "f'months", which is abbreviation of "for months".

I would say either way (word or number) it would stand for "for".
Otherwise wouldn't it be had been playin for 4 months (or playing 4 four months, or playing 4 4 (not fourty four) months...or AAAAAH! )

never thought about how the lyrics would READ if written, so of course it'd SAY 4, but john, u're right, it'd have to say for 4 months. so i'm convinced it means "for"

To me it means that the song is on a jukebox that only plays songs for a year and then those songs are removed. I may be over thinking it.

I always took it as 4 months, in that it appealed to me that it was showing how far in the song the band were. But that is probably just my bent.

It symbolizes the confusion caused by the atmosphere of the song. Since it's one year long it doesn't matter anymore how long it has been played, whether it's half a year, six months, .. they've been playing it for months now and they just won't stop, 'cause somehow there's joy in repetition.
