A lot of the answers to "why people love Dirty Mind" have to do with understanding the timing and history of it all.
For me, it's much simpler than that. Dirty Mind is honest, and nasty as fuck, and at the same time, it pop perfection. It is like if The Beatles of the early 60's and James Brown jizzed in the same cup, swirled it up, and poured it out on a keyboardshop in Uptown Minneapolis. No where in pop music, has "filthiness, been so raw and catchy at the same time. Plus, it the first real glimpse of the future. [Edited 6/20/09 14:47pm] "New Power slide...."

I don't really like it in full much. From his early days, I just like For You and Prince.

vinx98 said: this is a consistent and brilliant album.
consistent in that the same music instruments are used and played by prince throughout. it's not about technology, just about raw talent. it has a dingy, dirty, basement sound and is challenging to listeners then and even now. brilliant because the songs are excellent compositions and hold up on their own despite the lack of production. Straight up. nice guy.

From the album cover..to the black and white theme..to the dirtiness(is that a word) of the recordings and the songs? C'mon!..it was the ultimate in "freedom of expression"..maybe u did have to be there..his first two albums were cool, but record label safe..its widely known that this was his first "real" album and a precursor to the Prince we all love..besides if he didnt make this album, he wouldve been a poor mans stevie wonder and fell off like Switch and others of that era...
