Nate, like Nathan is short for Nathaniel, which means "Gift of God".

My wifes grandfather, two of her cousins and her great grandfather were all named Nathaniel. We named our son Nathaniel. Now that he's been here for 3 years I can't see any other name fitting him. (Whispering) "he's african american." I recently asked him if he wanted to change his name to Toby and he said he didn't like that name.

Boris the story I heard was "Nate" was short for Nativity.
