what do u think: Avalanche -studio & live

I already considered the studio version to be the best song
on "one nite alone" by far. The other trax on there are
great as well but Avalanche sounds like it's the best and
most accomplished effort on there.

So I didn't expect it to be even better when played live.

What a mistake.

Sitting there, calmly at the end of the disc it hit me hard
when I first heard it.

The horns flesh the song out beautifully. The original could
already be considered a cool new standard in jazz, but this
live version takes it even beyond that.

I don't think I've ever heard horns in that key on a Prince
song before. It's such a nice, full, deep sound.

It's the first time on the live set that the true vintage
Prince magic comes through.

Even the omission of the second verse doesn't do it any
harm [altho that would have made it even cooler].

caution; cliché statement approaching:

I realise that we shout this about every day about every
song we can think of, but I'm convinced that this would
make a nice single to promote the package. Perhaps not
as the first release off it, but surely as a second.

It's controversial [to some people anyway], it's magical
and it's a great composition.

Nice video from the performance to go along with it...

I can dream can't I?

¡I agree, it is fantastic! Going back to Avalanche after listening to all 3 cd's I thought what a shame that he did not play more from the ona studio.

¡See the world as it is and not the way you want it to be!

I couldn't agree more!
I think I overlooked this song when I received 'One Nite Alone'. I fell totally in love with 'U're Gonna C Me'.
However... ONCE you've heard 'Avalanche' live, it's breathtaking. Especially the moment the lights send a flurry of 'snowflakes' across the stage. Wonderful!
Prince really knows how to hit the spot, eh?

100% agree. I only got the studio and the live ONA CDs the other day and I listened to the live set first but I must have missed Avalanche. When I heard it on the studio version it stood out as being one of his finest. Then I went back and listened to the Live version and ... WOW. That is pure magic. Love the chorus - so sad and beautiful.
