Time for a new band name?

Yeah, I'm sure we've had this one before. But "New Power Generation" had its time, but I think it's getting a little long in the tooth and basically means nothing, really.

The reason I'm asking is that today I was thinking "Prince & the Minneapolis Sound (MPLSound)" would make for a nice band name, especially since he's incorporating so many prior band members in the various lineups lately.

of course, that might lead to some "Prince & the Minneapolis Sound Machine" jokes, but... eh.

Back when the "techno" version of Come came out, I thought the intro hinted at a possible new band name.

yeah.

would be nice if he left the new age-y spiritual mumbo jumbo out of the band and brand names, though.

Bands nowadays are either the person's name OR the band name. Not usually both unless they're an older act.

Take for example Jack White (not comparing artists): he is in The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and soon to be The Dead Weather.

If Prince is going to have a new band name, he needs to keep "Prince" out of the title. I doubt that'll happen.

No it's not. Branding yourself is a good thing, not a bad thing. No different than Paisley Park, Controversy Music, etc.

Considering relevance requires removing "Prince and the" from the moniker, my vote is for "SH!TNEY HOUSTON".

Wait... already been done?!?!

Yeah, the only problem is the NPG is not know as a quality band. New Power Generation is pretty cheesy. Minneapolis Sound is an awesome band name.

"MPLSound System"... why not rip off a more timely band that apes a few of his earlier works?

I disagree. I think once you've branded yourself, inertia sets in. Resistance to change, etc.

SoulAlive

I'm surprised that he has kept the name "NPG" for this long.I always thought that he was the type of person who got bored with the same concepts and ideas. The whole 'new power soul' concept is soooo 1988.

I'm voting that.
Besides, NPG can stay as the name of its independent label and his state of mind.

He should title his band "Prince and the Hired Guns" since he's using a revolving band rotation. Or he can go all out, incorporate the Time and have:

5 drummers Sheila E., Cora, Mike B., John Blackwell and Jellybean Johnson

5 Keyboard players Renato Neto, Morris Hayes, Jimmy Jam, Monte Moir and Dr. Fink

5 Bass players C.C. Dunham, Rhonda, Larry G.(minus the preaching),and Terry Lewis, Levi, and Sonny T.

4 Guitar players Prince, Mike Scott, Kat Dyson, and Miko

2 Horns Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss

and have all of them on the stage at the same time to make such a wonderful noise.
