Gett Off conundrum

Hi there,

I have been puzzling over the song Gett Off for ages, and I thought somebody here might know the answer.

I remember, several years ago, I heard a different version of version of Gett Off to the one on the album. In this version he says something like "do it in the closet underneath the clothes and uh, oh my god!" in a spoken interlude in the middle.

This version does not appear on my copy of the Diamonds and Pearls album or The Hits. Anyone know why it is different and where I can find it?

Thanks
I like it when you dance for me.

ah yes, i've been wondering about this many times myself. as far as
i remember the only version that has all the elements combined is a
long mix on the maxi single but that's a bit too long and too dull
imo.

i would love an short extended version that has all the elements
and all the lyrics.

is that basically the video version or is that lacking some stuff
as well?

There's about a dozen mixes out there, and some include those extended lyrics you mentioned. Thrust. Purple Urge. Housestyle. Flutestramental, etc etc etc.

...and as the second poster mentioned that spoken part is in the video version.

Gett Off" (Damn Near 10 Minutes Mix) is what you are looking for, it was on the original one-sided promo 12" of Gett Off issued for Prince's Birthday (And sounds very different to the single version).

i know, but is that the only one that contains all the lyrics?

i was hoping that i'm overlooking one mix here. but the times
i've tried to listen to them all, i always get bored after the
first 3 mixes. there's just too many of them

It is available on the extended remix. This remix is called "purple pump mix" in the UK but is the same version.

Here is the "Damn near 10 mins" cover:

Get Off and Gett Off are 2 completely different songs... wink

Get Off is just a b-side to the extended 12 Inch single New Power Generation (song from Graffiti Bridge).

The extra lyrics appear in both the original 'damn near 10 min' mix
and the regular 'extended remix' from the 12" or CD single.

The album version is actually just an edit of this 'extended remix'.
The version used in the video is also an edit of this mix, just a
slightly longer one which still includes some of the extra lyrics.

Some of the extra lyrics actually appear in the Diamonds and Pearls
album booklet. This is because the version of the song that was
originally going to be included was an edit of the 'damn near 10 mins'
mix. But this was changed once the track had been remixed, and an
edit of this was used instead.

The songs are fundamentally different but they have one musical theme in common.

'Get Off' starts with a guitar or keyboard musical phrase which repeats throughout:

A A C C D C A

The "identical" phrase is used in 'Gett Off' (as a sort of musical nod to its namesake), played on the flute but one and half semi-tones higher:

C C Eb Eb Eb F Eb C

It features in the album and single remix versions at the 3'35" point.

You've never had the maxi to "New Power Generation" ?? Those last 3 songs, are an EP within an EP. Forget the first three. Track 1 is the album. Track 2 is T.C. Ellis rapping. Track 3 is Tony M rapping.

But 4, 5, and 6 are great. You can even hear the tape run out and Prince ask "Is everything alright back there?"

It's the Get-Off Maxi single. There's also a "Damn well near 10 min" version.

Also, the music video uses that spoken rap line, and he also used the line on his MTV performance.

The Maxi-Single was widely circulated and is easy to find I believe.
THe Maxi-Single is also better than the version on Diamonds and Pearls IMO. There are numerous other mixes including a club-mix in which Rosie Gaine's constipated sounding voice threatens to derail the vibe altogether, but Violet the Organ Grinder makes up for it.

I haven't read the rest of this thread, so forgive me if someobody else point this out, but that's not the same song.

"Get Off" and "Gett Off" are completely different songs. The Get Off that is the b-side to New Power Generation actually really sucks.

U R looking for the maxi single called "Housestyle"...one of my favorite jams of all time...there's a video for it.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I don't think the video version was ever made available. It wasn't until this thread that I even realized the album version and the video version were different. But yeah, the video version has an extra 45 seconds. The album version was 4:31 and the video version is about 5:15ish.

On a side note, KMOJ, which is a Minneapols radio station played yet another edit that was never released back in the summer of 1991. I remember taping it and playing it over and over. It contained the "something about u just screams of a real sexy affair" verse (my fave verse) in addition to the others but it was not the "damn near" or "extended remix" version.

^ The only versions with that line I remember are "Extended", "Houstyle" / "Urge" & "Thrust".
Can't remember anything about "Damn Near" & "Purple Pump", sorry.
