Basically, Sheila E. saved his ass.

True, but aside from the song itself it was still pretty good.

Daym what do some people want him to do in a 5 minute appearance on television question

Levitate? Freeze himself in ice? Jump off a building? Make a jumbo jet or the Statue of Liberty disappear? WTF?!?

It's a 5 minute performance on tv. As such he maxed those 5 minutes like few could. He was looking sharp, Sheila was lookin FOINE, Eric was on the horn, his guitar solo was smooth. But it was only 5 minutes. I mean daym.

I'm amazed at how hard it is for some fans to rationally assess a performance without getting emotionally drunk.

Love for Prince is great. Being reasonable is better.

Any real connoisseur of Prince music can use the fingers and toes of 10 friends to rattle off performances (even TV ones) that far surpass this.

...he looked fab, he sounded great, it's too bad this tour is over - this band is too good to shop now. I loved it. As for those of you going to Vegas, I hope you lose everything at the tables (who me jealous?) I have to go now cry cry cry

Hilarious!!!smile...I may feel the same way when it comes on tonight...Some folks look much too close to the surface when judging performance. The TRUE fans can differentiate between amazing and good...EVEN Prince though, could never continue the momentum of old performances of '85 '91 etc...STILL!!! That's no excuse for you folks that fall for any average performance and say "ITS AMAZING" everytime...smile

Not to be rude but the stupidity here is amazing sometimes. Preachy??? Is the whole Prince thing NEW to some people?? Prince has been singing about this kind of stuff forever. I would love to see the performance that some people have going on in their head before they see it. He must be lighting his guitar on fire and humping the stage because ANYONE who didn't find that funky has a whole in their soul. And SynthiaRose, I can see now why you're at the BACK of the line. And this maybe just because I'm emotionally drunk, but that performace kicked ass tonight, and 4 months from now...it will STILL kick ass. All Hail the Might Prince!!! worship

Amen to that, I honestly feel what you're saying. Some people around this site are morons and they complain about everything. It amazes me how these "so-called" Prince experts try to denounce everything he does now by comparing it to what he did 15 years ago. First, that was 15 years ago, move on. Second, you act like you were the one performing it then, it was still Prince. Honestly the "experts" around here couldn't execute Prince's worst perfomance. I watched Leno Thurs. night and the "Wallflowers" performance was no where near as tight/entertaining as this. Prince and The NPG crammed energy, style and exquisite musicianship in 5mins. I was curious to see how they would alter this 8min jam and they did it almost to perfection. I really can not comprehend what some around here expected him to do. I guess you all are looking for a 25 year old Prince to remind you of your younger selves. The "experts" need to grow up and move on. If you do not like anything Prince did post 1980's move on and replay the Livesexy, Purple Rain, Sign O the Times Videos. The rest of us respect where Prince is now and have evolved with his sound. I've never seen a group of people bitch and moan about what someone should have done in a 5min spot before.

Yeah I'm tired of hearing this Preachy complaint as well. If you don't like it don't listen to it. No one forced you to watch Leno, buy The Rainbow Children etc. Where were all of your complaints when he specifically names or references Christ, Jesus, and God on the tracks, The Cross, God, Temptation, Anna Stesia, The Holy River, 4 The Tears in Your Eyes, Power Fantastic, I Would Die 4 U, etc. I personally prefer this more mature Prince to the more profane performer he once was. I have no problem with the old Prince, however he is 44 now, its time to grow and move on. If Prince were using profanity and constantly talking about sex these same morons would be complaining about Prince needing to grow up. This reminds me of some reviews I read of Stevie Wonder's Have A Talk With God from Songs In The Key of Life, some people acutally complain about that song being too preachy, well in that case don't listen to it. No one forces you to listen to this, you have a choice. I'm not a religious person, however I do respect others postions on their beliefs. I may respect this because I do believe in God, a concept of spirituality and our 1st Amendment rights. Regardless, it amazes me how even mentioning a spirtiual belief, being, etc. makes people cringe while profanity, exploitation, over sexualizing etc, are not offensive. Whats wrong with this picture???

AMEN to that!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!...Some "musician" friends of mine, who I formerly believed to be intelligent, seasoned veterans at the age of 35 respectively, didn't want to go to the ONA show in Vancouver BC, cuz Prince wasn't doing the splits with all the pyrotechnics and self indulgence...I was embarassed that I ever took them seriously. Looking forward to the performance. Leno is on ow...smile

I thought it was a very good performance especially with the limited time he had.The guitar portion by Prince was excellent.Prince is so good in his live shows maybe we're expecting too much of him.

Man oh man oh man. You had to be deaf, dumb and blind to think that this performance wasn't the bomb. Man, Prince and the N.P.G. are really on top of their game. Prince showed that you don't have to roll around on the floor and dry hump it just to be a kick-ass performer. Everything about the performance was sexy and the music was off the chain. Them suits were too sharp for me, I'd like to meet Prince's taylor. 5 mins was too short but Prince did what most performers can't do in that time and that's truly entertain. I can't wait to get my funk on on Sunday and I hope to meet a lot of you guys out there. Peace.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Bravo!!! Those idiotic dance moves that were sometimes enmbarassing to watch in the past are now gone--this year the lastest fashion is to lie in the heat of passion and do the get down dance! smile

DParkerWasCool, you've said just about everything in two posts that I was thinking. And it's amazing how some folks can be so uptight about the same things he's been singing about for years, yet not uptight about the explicit content of his previous music. The fact that they know he's hobknobbing with JW's is where the latest stigma comes into play.

He made the most of the short time Leno's producer's gave him in that spot. It was damn sweeet.

I thought it was great biggrin

My only criticism is he needs to pay some backup singers!! I noticed this on the ONA-Live disk too. The backup is always WEAK, I know Rhonda tries (& Sheila pitched in tonight), but shit could be much stronger w/ some voices really going at it back there... nod

True, especially with a song like that. The background vocals on TRC are fab-u-lous.

I suspect the idea is for the band to sound somewhat raw, not overly polished, yet still tight. If Prince wanted strong backups vocals, he could have them. At this point in his career, he is keenly aware of his sound and what he wants. It's ART man!!! LOL...smile
