Little Red Corvette performed live at Town Hall last night Sandra Bernhard closed the 20th anniversary performance of her show "Without You I'm Nothing" just like she closed it 20 years ago, performing "Little Red Corvette." How did she get permission to do that? I supposed she can claim the First Amendment defense of parody. NeoSoul.com

I don't think you have to get permission to cover a song live. Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

She almost always closes her shows with Little Red Corvette. I've seen her a few times, and every time I saw her she closed with it.

Correct. Nor do you need it to record it as well as long as you pay the compulsory mechanical license fees. [Edited 6/11/09 6:51am]

And even if you do need permission, why couldn't she just have called up Prince or WB and asked for permission? It's not such a stretch to think she'd ask if need be.

I didn't know she could sing. I love a Man who:

You don't have to get permission or pay royalties as long as the venue is an ASCAP member and up-to-date on their annual ASCAP fees. I know a few local musicians, and they can't play covers in non ASCAP venues. ASCAP even has its own "police force" which are basically spies they send out to non ACAP venues from time to time to make sure no cover songs are played. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"
