That's blasphemy!! Without songs like Head, there'd be no Prince! Think about it!

I disagree! I became a fan after hearing When Doves Cry for the first time.

I didn't need Head and Sister. Personally, I'm a fan DESPITE those songs. It just stuns me that a man could be so overt and brash.

Even more recently, I LOVE the song Come. And that's one of Prince's RAUNCHIEST!

We all have a little bit of a closet "freak" in us, but I just can't imagine singing a song where I'm going off in a psycho way yelling and screaming about "coming" for all my friends and family to hear.

Now that's what makes Prince, Prince. But I just believe that some of his subject matter and content was WAY WAY out there. He's an artist, but I contend that the early smut wasn't art.

I'll even go as far as to say that the song "Come" is art. It's musically fascinating in my opinion. But there's nothing "artful" about Sister, or "wanting to fuck the taste out of your mouth".

I relate... but I wouldn't overtly relate... or write a damn song about it!! lol

You didn't think about it!

I was there from the beginning. Had it not been for Prince's "taboo" days that made people stop and go WTF, he would not have lasted to get around to "When Doves Cry"!
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

i think its a bit sad that he could ignore any of the art he's created. Unfortunately the majority thats ignored and overlooked today was from a critically acclaimed period that got him where he is today...tis tis what a pity, sometimes life can be so shitty!!!!!

Prince shouldn't be ashamed of anything fropm his catalogue, but he should be ashamed of himself that he could take that stance.....but all in all i think it just shows you how much relgion can potentially twist and warp a person

I can understand he may feel a bit too old to sing head, and maybe perform the motions on stage - but hey that is fine, but dont pretend the period never was and instruct people to not go there during interviews - princey that is the period that made you, of course thats what people wanna talk about.

Ummm... I respectfully disagree. Talent is talent. Cream (no pun intended) rises to the top. Good music is good music.

There are plenty of artist who last without needing to sing songs like that.

I'm not saying Prince was wrong. In this country we have freedom of speech. But if you're saying that that's something that Prince needed to do in order to last, I beg to differ.

True, there was competition like Michael Jackson in the late 70's and early 80's. True there was competition like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and Kool & the Gang. But I don't think Prince "had to go that route", or else he would not have lasted. If anything, I think hardcore lyrics like that ran the risk of him NOT LASTING to get around to When Doves Cry.
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I'm not saying it's what he needed to do! I'm saying it's what he DID do and had he not, he wouldn't have lasted! Those songs are what set him apart from ALL competition including the King of Freaky Funk himself, Mr. Rick James and the could do no wrong then Golden Child, Mr. Michael Jackson!

You can beg to differ all you want but I witnessed it and I know what I'm talking about!

Well, P hasn't performed any of the songs that he used to sing. Not performing them gets rid of some of the embarrassment he may feel, if he is embarrassed by what he's done. [IMO, I don't think he's embarrassed....but it's not possible for me to know what he thinks/feels]

HEAD is an amazing song, nothing embarrassing about the subject: oralsex,

In Denmark you are able to sing about that on radio, absolutely no restrictions, no censorship at all biggrin

but... I have never hear HEAD on the radio though,

only the usual hits like Gett Off, Cream, TMBGITW, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Musicology etc.....

wink

And if the funny Head should be buried then we can bury about 1/3 of his outpit till 1995 can we? Would there be space for Come? or Lovesexy?....

This is all so true and something that I especially can agree with today. But at the time of Dirty Mind, I was 10 years old and could relate to none of that. I never saw the video for Dirty Mind at the time but I know if I'd seen it back then, I would never have been a fan of that weirdo! I was a 10 year old boy and a few years off of being able to relate to the sexualty of the songs.

Today I can listen to those songs, puff the chest up and declare that I'm proud to be a fan. However, I can't watch that Dirty Mind video without seriously cringing. Honestly, what was he thinking? lol

my Sister was 32 lovely and loose...

I knew a situation like this, (I won't say the brother and sister were having sex)

but the older sister was lovely and loose
and her younger brother 'watched her have sex' a lot, even we got a few peak shows

She don't wear no underwear...
his sister didn't either, don't let it be a summer day and she has a summer dress on walking by a few of the fellas washing their car... oh boy

That's not my point. True, I remember them, but that doesn't mean I look back on them the same way that I look back on songs like Adore and When Doves Cry.

I'm simply saying that I would think that they'd be embarrassing songs for Prince to look back on. This is the same person that many people proclaim a genius. I agree. But songs like this, I consider dirty laundry.

That's just my opinion.

your what's called a Prude, your modesty & puritanical senses are offended by those songs because you envision what he is saying and see yourself in a situation like that and you get embarrased. Your deflecting. You think sex is dirty and shameful and something to be done in the dark always with the lights off and curtains drawn, and you think about something else when it's happening..when it's over you rush to wash up, and scrub off the dirty of sex but you can't get away from your desire

Thank you.

THANK YOU ENGLISH GENT!

SOMEBODY understands what I'm trying to say!! LOL

I look back on that old stuff and cringe too!!

Someone posted a clip here just below of a vid of prince wearing some lime green scantilly clad outfit, and using his guitar like it's some enlarged penis, and spewing his semen all over the audience!!

THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!

I LOVE 90% of Prince's music... but I just think that the Dirty Mind era, and some of his subject matter and lewd behavior was a bit much!

That's all I'm trying to say. As the creator of so many beautiful masterpieces like Adore, She Gave Her Angels, Crucial, Pink Cashmere, When Doves Cry, And God Created Woman... looking back on that era is a JOKE!

That's just MY OPINION!

I respect everyone on this thread... but I'm just saying that I could have done without fucking the taste out of your mouth, the incestual "Sister"... and that whole Dirty Mind - Controvery era. There are some cuts I LOVE from that era... but some of the songs are just rediculous and should have been keep in the closet.

I'm talking "family values" people! lol

Prince has always had a way about him. Look at songs like "I Love You in Me". Even "Little Red Corvette"... and even "Glam Slam". Those songs are sexual ART!

There's nothing artful about Head, and some of the other Horny Toad smut. Good music. Absolutely for their time. Good lyrics??? Ummmmm... I suppose that depends on how much of an overt or closet freak you are!

We all mature. Prince has matured. But that era was just "shockadelic"! lol

And obviously you're not a prude. Love the graphic by the way! lol

I just think there's some acts that should be kept behind closed doors. Obviously back then, Prince wished we all were nude, and wished there were no rules... and wanted to let his body be free... blah blah blah.

But damn dude, put some pants on when your onstage! Was that too much to ask??

And why air familial laundry in songs like Sister... or whatever. I know Prince wasn't Stevie Wonder or Kirk Franklin (back then), but ADMIT IT... some of that sh*t was just pure SMUT!!!!

ADMIT IT!!!

I'm not saying it was wrong! I'm calling a spade a spade! lol

If it looks like a rat and smells like a rat... it must be a rat!

I'm just happy that as Prince matured, he was able to turn the pure smut into artistic smut!

Listen to Adore compared to Jack U Off!

Don't get me wrong, I loved Jack U Off when I was 14, but it does not stand the test of time. I listen to that song and say "What was Prince thinking???" (Obviously, we know what Prince was thinking.) But I can listen to songs like Kiss and Paisley Park and think... "That man is a genious".

There was a time and a place for the smut on Dirty Mind and Controversy. I understand this. And many of you... myself included... appreciate/appreciated it. But looking back, at the "non-art smut", I cringe.

With that being said, the man is matured into the greatest artist there ever was... or will be... with the state of music and the crap on the radio today, and the direction of music.

Remember when I met U, baby
U were on your way 2 be wed
U were such a sexy thing
I loved the way U walked, the things U said
And I was so nonchalant
I didn't want U 2 be misled
But I've gotta have U, baby
I gotta have U in my bed

And U said - "I'm just a virgin and I'm on my way 2 be wed
But U're such a hunk so full of spunk, I'll give U..."

CHORUS:
Head till U're burnin' up
Head till U get enough
Head till U're love is red
Head - love U till U're dead

U know U're good, girl
I think U like 2 go down
U wouldn't have stopped but ah...
I came on your wedding gown

And U said - "I must confess, I wanna get undressed and go 2 bed"
With that, I jammed
U fool, U married me instead!
Now morning, noon, and night I give U...

Head

Well I'm 41, and not only am I very glad but I'm proud that he released songs like "Head" and "Jack U Off" back in the day. And if he released songs like that today with explicit lyrics like that and with that same sounding funk, I'd still love it.

What's to be embarassed about, that kids might hear it? Well, hell Prince ain't for no damn kids anyway. I'll tell you what is embarassing though, Prince watering his music down with modern shit hop influences and slang. Now that's what's embarassing.
