Sign O The Times Movie I've not watched this in YEARS. I forgot how much I loved it. (I have the VHS, and I'm putting it on a DVD, and eventually my AppleTV as well.)
What is your fave song in the movie? Your decision can be based on the live arrangement, the lights, the costumes, the dancing, anything, but tell what song and why. For me, I really liked the sound of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man". I liked the color of lights in "ICNTTPOYM" as well. However, I think "Forever In My Life" edges them both out just a little bit. EDIT: One more little moment that I love is during "Beautiful Night" when Sheila and Prince are trading off on drums (after Prince plays) and Cat gets on the mic and says "Beautiful Night, ya'll say it", and there's a shot of the audience. There's a black girl in a yellow shirt and matching head band (a la Latoya) that is having the time of her life. You can see her in little parts throughout. But I love her in that part. THE MUTHERFUCKING LIGHTS MATCHED HIS OUTFIT. The bitch was on fire. I loved him diving under Cat and ripping off her tutu, too. But the lights and the outfit, hell yeah. This came out when I was in the Navy. I bought a jean jacket and did my own version of his Beautiful Night jacket. I used smaller gold safety pins, etc. Actually....., there's a video of me wearing it, in 1989, here: http://www.vimeo.com/2938226

I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man, I just loved the energy of it, and the piano line Boni plays into it.

The film could have only included Forever In My Life and I would have been sold. His best re-interpretation of one of his own songs ever.
By the way ernestsewell, you might wanna get a Canadian copy of the SOTT film on DVD. 5.1 sound, original aspect ratio and top-notch image quality. Edit: Didn't see that Nikademus already recommended the CA DVD. . [Edited 6/2/09 3:16am] If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

The Cross
The energy and sheer power, musicall and vocally, are breathtaking! In fact the whole movie is awesome/ even the inclusion of U Got The Look vid (damn, I wish I could have seen a live version of this) - heard live version and it sounded great

Housequake! Prince and Cat are on fire and the live version has even more power than the CD version. Also, great heavy drums in the beginning of the song, go Sheila!

I got it in about 3-4 days. Worth the investment. __________________________________________________

I was interested to see how they'd reproduce the camille ones live.
"Hot Thing"'s great. But "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is my favorite... Overall neat movie, barring out some terrible interludes, that boring jam session and the sappy inclusion of the "U Got the Look" video

I saw this at the cinema about a week before before Prince came to London with the Lovesexy tour and it was fuckin' awesome!
The atmosphere was electric, just like being at a real gig, people were cheering, singing and dancing in the aisles and as much as I love the dvd seeing it on the big screen was something else! I rank it up there with the best of the real concerts I attended. Some people are like Slinkies...
They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

I totally dig the energy and the arrangement of ICNTTPOYM in the movie.
Much better then the version on the album. Play in the Sunshine also brims with energy and playfullness and love the remark: 'Ladies and gentlemen...on the drums, Sheila E!.... Not bad.... for a girl"

Tough choices here, this is an embarassment of riches as far as Prince performances, quality of songs etc...I wore the "Housequake" portion of my VHS tape out within my first 2 weeks of having it, Bearing in mind that I love everything here, I'm gonna go with "Play In The Sunshine" which often gets overlooked in comparison with all the strong material of this era. First and foremost, the film version with real drums and horns adds a muscular "whomp" to the song that was sorely needed since the album cut sounded tinny even back in '87. But there's also so many little touches in this performance: The "Hey now, now hey hey" breakdown, the cocky "THANK YOU!", the confounding "67 Minutes!" (what does that mean, I still don't know?), Cat's "FUCK OFF!", the way Prince says the words "for a girl" and finally that short but killer guitar solo at the end. Pure class. My only complain is that I wish this went right into "Housequake" as it does on the album...never really felt that snippet of "LRC" that got wedged between the two. Lol
the confounding "67 Minutes!" (what does that mean, I still don't know?)
I always thought he said "6 or 7 minutes", like he is saying shall we make a 6 minute or 7 minute jam out of this song? Something like that.

BTW, in contrary to some people here I am not really that fond of the version of If I was your girlfriend in the movie.
Its not bad at all, i mean, but it just hasn't got that unique and innovative quality of the album version (the camille voice, those creepy sounding layered background vocals, the use of sound effects). The movie version sounds more like an 'ordinary' R&B song, i dont hate it, but it doesnt touch me on the same level the album version does.

TOTALLY feelin' ya on that. The live version is what made me love the song. It was too tinny and dry on the album. Same with Housequake. The live versions have some meat to them.

i do like 85' live better I thought the audio was from an actual concert from the tour, but they filmed the actual show at Paisley Park, and lip synced the whole thing to the live recording from the tour. The tour footage was too horrible to use, and can only be seen a few times in the film. Like some of the mid section of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", and some very wide shots of the audience in the dark, or a pan shot from above. Seems like maybe there's a couple of shots in "Beautiful night" that were from the original tour footage too. Everything else was at Paisley Park. If you notice, a few times, his voice is quite clear, but he's no where near close enough to the mic to be heard THAT good. The '85 what?
