WHICH ALBUM WOULD YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO RELEASE AS A FOLLOW UP TO PURPLE RAIN INSTEAD OF ATWIAD?

Following the massive explosion of the purple rain era..i think it would've been very interesting to see which album would've kept the momentum going as a follow up album (if it were posible, i know the others were from different eras)...I mean do better then 'Around the world in a day.

1.Diamonds and pearls...(get off video + song as first single)

2.sign o the time (album + concert movie)...would've been another box office smash.

3. Lotusflow3r(only)..(with proper videos).

WHATS YOU PICK?

Prince is really prolific, he's taking chances, and ATWIAD is one of my fave albums, a masterpiece:

but I get what you are saying, if Prince would play the game "safe" to sell more copies, he could have done what Michael Jackson did in his career:

releasing a new album every 3rd-4th year only,

maybe only these albums:

1979 Prince
1984 Purple Rain
1987 Sign O' The Times
1991 Diamonds And Pearls
1995 The Gold Experience
1998 Crystal Ball
2001 The Rainbow Children
2004 Musicology
2009 Lotus Flower

but damn so much Prince music - would have been lost then... masterpieces like 1999, Parade, Lovesexy, prince and a lot more wink

Thank God Prince is not like Michael Jackson at all... lol cool

SOTT would have been great. prince or Gold would have been too much too often. (I've always said, as others have, that Gold was really Purple Rain II in many ways).

not saying he should've reduce his output..was thinking about the order in which certain albums were released..there was a big buzz on the heels of purple rain..and then came atwiad..which was a flop compared to PR..was asking opinions as to which album if available in that era would've kept the momentum from PR high.

^ Okay: biggrin

Sign O' The Times would be my answer then, because of the strong singles:

I would have chosen these for singles...:

Sign O' The Times
U Got The Look
Housequake (with a video from the SOTT movie)
Adore (with a sexy video)
If I Was Ur Girlfriend (video from the movie)
I Could Never Take The Place Of Ur Man (also video from the SOTT movie)

this would have been another smash...

- sorry if I went a bit off topic again, with the singles... ? wink

I think C&D would have been a good choice. I've always loved this album. It's a raw little rocker that IMO would have continued the great guitar work on Purple Rain. Even the rap would have probably been cool in 1985.

Here is an interesting one..

1999..yeah ,lets just say that it did not exist yet..but then dropped as a follow up to Purple rain.. BOOM!!!
With some proper videos it would've been a killer...

singles:
1999
delirious
something in the water(with a cool video)
little red corvette.

Sign of the Times blows both albums out the water

Sign of the Times could have only exited if Dream Factory was worked on and Parade had to be created followed

But if I could get a fusion of Around the World in a Day with Lotus Flow3r since it has a bit more of a rock groove,

Lotus Flower has no history like ATWIAD and it's not as colorful

1999 was definitely good enough to be a strong follow up, but I then have to ask what comes between Controversy and Purple Rain? I don't think Purple Rain would have been promoted the way it was without the success of 1999.

100% agreement, I said the same before since Roadhouse Garden seemed to have a more Purple Rainish feel he at least was able to work the songs together at pre PR shows

What do you think of Splash Wonderful A$$ & Go
do you think those were Roadhouse Garden cuts?

Good list! But where is "Dirty Mind"??
You cant leave out Dirty Mind
neutral It's the basis for all his later albums.
So i think the list should start-off with DM

I think to be a little more commercially successful, Prince should have milked the Purple Rain Tour a little longer and waited till 86' to release an album that would have been a combo of both Parade and ATWIAD

Possible track list:
Around the World in A Day (unreleased 'Pop' Version)
Girls and Boys
Condition of the Heart
Raspberry Beret
Pop Life
Temptation
Mountains
Kiss
Anotherloverholenyohead
The Ladder
Sometimes it Snows in April

Songs like New Position, Paisley Park and America could have been released as BAD ASS B-sides lol

I don't know, would have avoided all that market saturation

None of the albums that he actually released after it because his style had already drastically changed just as much as "Around The World In A Day". The proper album to have been released at the time would be the unreleased follow-up to "1999" that he said he had recorded in his "Rolling Stone" interview back in 1985.

I've always imagined that Prince could have put together an album titled 'The Dance Electric' containing many songs recorded in 1983/84,such as...

The Dance Electric
Extra Loveable
G-Spot
Moonbeam Levels
Electric Intercourse
Turn It Up
Possessed
Feel U Up

and a few other tracks recorded in that period.Could you imagine an album like this being released in the summer of 1985?!

he should've released an album with the name 'ROYAL BADNESS'

and these songs on it:

1. PUSSY CONTROL ( follow up to darling Nikki, piss off GORE some more)
2 GET-OFF
3 SHHH
4 INSATIABLE
5 KISS
6 ADORE
7 U GOT THE LOOK
8 CREAM
9 BAMBI
10 SEXY M.F

an album like this would have pushed the envelope even more, following up on Dirty Mind and controversy, and set off a fire storm (tipper gore) and create a huge buzz!!! People would buy like crazy cause no one was that raw at the time..and SEX sells.

That would have been a KILLER album! definitely would have ridden the Purple Rain wave a lot better than ATWIAD. But on question, which version of Feel U up?

The Gold Experience. It would probably have made The Most Beautiful Girl In The World into number one, not number three, and I Hate U would probably have reached higher than 12.

It's funny, but music has probably got a lot to do with timing.

i don't get this thread at all!

Talking bout songs released ten full years after Purple Rain was recorded as follow-ups. Crazy.

I wouldn't change a damn thing about that history, it was perfect.

It's the second half of his career where all the glaring mistakes are!

I think ATWIAD was the right way to go. What better way to weed out the bandwagoners from the real fans than by throwing us something completely different? Purple Rain Pt 2 would've been perceived, even back then most likely, as laziness for the sake of commercial success.
