Prince.... domesticated after marriage --- ??

Excuse me for asking the question about Prince.... ?

but:

Prince made the brilliant "Gold Experience" in 1995, then he got engaged and married and created the sugary love epos "Emancipation", most of these songs about Mayte and their love relation,

I remember Prince said in an interview, he had not been domesticated, I can't remember what interview, but it was around 1996....

still imo. he lost some edge, wilderness, the raw energy after getting married,

it's like "the wild animal" had been tamed.

I wish he would set his "wild animal" loose again, I really love his new LF/ MPLS albums, but it's still "safe" music:

don't you agree.....???

Aren't you all hoping for something raw, and "wild" music again... ?

..MAYBE the problem was NOT prince being married..maybe it was the ex-wives..they got in the way of a creative genius and try 2 monoplolize his time..they got all jealous because they wanted 2 b 1st..but any woman that TRULY does L-O-V-E and appreciate will ONLY build and add 2 the foundation..not try 2 tear it down..MAKE HIM STRONGER..and that means in every way..all the time and be the ROCK..

The answer is simple: Prince has grown up...there's no need 2 act like a wild animal 4 all of 1's life.

As exciting and fun as that era was, it's over. Everybody loses their 'edge' as the years pass, that's just how life is.

The edge gets dull over time but Prince lost his bite with his conversion 2 JW.

"Safe" music is a very good description of his music in the past decade. While I understood the syrup on Emancipation, I was more kind of left hanging w/ the dryer sound of it. Still liked the opus overall; it's one of those albums that always works well on Shuffle, every time pretty much.

Prince used a microphone shaped as a gun because he said his words were like a bullet. Oddly he's stopped using that microphone. Someone has to show him how to turn the safety switch OFF with that, and get back to using it properly again.

TRC wasn't edgy, despite how much people love it. It was a sermon. Prince has laid out trinkets of opinion in the past, but this time his Cuban boots were firmly planted in the pulpit at the Kingdom Hall.

But overall, his music has been very safe since Emancipation onward. Think about the time line. Just months prior we had a relatively good rock album called Chaos and Disorder. We had a rock/pop masterpiece with curse-laden harsh verdicts on love, life, sex, and the music industry called The Gold Experience, and Exodus. We had a sex filled album (and it's greatly overlooked as such) with COME, while still covering topics like racism and abuse. THAT was edge. It wasn't just content, but it was in the production as well. COME is short, to the point and brilliant. Chaos is a relatively strong album, sans one or two songs. It was a sonic explosion in your ear cavity. The list goes on and on with examples.

But since he turned JW, since he got married and settled, then divorced (which I thought would spawn some great breakup music, it just spawned a few nods to the end of the marriage on Rave, but still a good album there), and since he stopped cursing and/or being salty in his approach, his music has suffered, greatly.

You put that so well. Those are my absolute all-time favourite Prince-years - 1993-1996. He was just SO on point back then in everything he did and tried to say. Words are not enough to describe how thrilled I am by The Gold Experience, for example eek .

He actually never said "duck" on "Muse 2 The Pharaoh", but did say "We don't give a duck" on "1+1+1=3". Like it needs to be broken down...either one is truly horrible.

We always talk about "cringe worthy moments", but I physically CRINGED when I heard those lines. Other cringe moments:

"Get busy, big baby cuz when dem devil come
Dem devil come dressed as light"

"The opposite of NATO is OTAN"

God...the list goes on.

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be snarky about the corrections. I hate that album, and was looking on DTT to find what song(s) the "duck" line was in, just so I could reference the title. Whack = YES.

It wasn't marriage that inhibited Prince's creativity. It was leaving WB.

WB was his industry home of what, seventeen years? It was a huge life-changing event to leave his parent company.

Prince was on his own for the first time in his professional career. He must have felt a little bit scared, a little unsure of himself.

That's why his music became so safe and timid. Prince was in uncharted territory, thrown into a brand new situation, without guidance or support. And his lack of confidence shows in his music.

His marriage to Mayte was a consequence of his leaving WB. He needed some semblance of stability, so he latched on to her. But she could hardly provide the kind of support a record label could. It's too much to ask for from a post-adolescent girl. So Prince ended up with Larry Graham and the JWs. Here was an institution that could furnish Prince with the discipline and stability he craved.

Once Prince established some stability in his life, he was able to mount his commercial comeback.
