Starfish and Coffee

This song seems to be so popular. I don't know what I am missing, but I don't think it is that great of a song. Especially on ONAL. It interrupts a great medley (and I usually don't like medleys). It is probably my least favorite song on SOTT. It sounds like a song that my 4 year old neice would like.

Nothing wrong with that biggrin

For my part, comeon, I love it--I like the melody (direct and simple and very catchy; the essence of pop) and the message. It's not only a 'fun' bubblegum song, but it has a spiritual/political theme.

I ask you to listen to it again. However, comeon, it does seem that different people have different tastes--perhaps you are more into his 'funk' side?

I know I'm gonna get flamed for saying this, but I've never understood what's so great about this song.I agree with you comeon,it is also my LEAST favorite song on 'SOTT'.It just doesn't do anything for me.I think it sounds kinda silly and childish, like a first grade sing-along ditty...lol...

Each to their own of course, but I always thought it was supposed to sound that way. Like Andyf says, its the essence of bubblegum pop, but also has an undercurrent of meaning which in my opinion makes it a great little song. Great because its quirky, rather than in spite of.
PS - Having listened to this album for X amount of years I still can't find the elusive track I don't like, but that makes me a rather run of the mill, boring fan lol

But it is very much styled on Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and sounds like a schoolyard ditty because, gosh, it's talking about kids at school!!!

Not everyone's cup of tea, certainly, but I love it. It's in the same vein as tracks like Movie Star and Scarlet Pussy, as far as I'm concerned.

Right on Mindflux! Prince has a brilliant habit of making the sound of the music concur with the lyrics--in If I Was Your Girlfriend, he sounds feminine.

I have always loved this song. It was on the mix tape given to me that introduced me to Prince. At the time I thought it stood out much like "it" does but its position on SOTT or ONA is irrelevant to me - I hear it and I smile. That’s what its all about to me - great "SONG"

I liked it when I first started listening to Prince, as well as Slow Love. Now I usually skip past those songs to hear the other songs on SOTT.
