Purple Rain Original Double Album Track Listing I'm sure its on the org somewhere, but I have searched to no avail.
Can someone post the original track listing of the Purple Rain double album. I want to put a mix on my Ipod for the 25th anniversary. I know I have all the songs, just not in the right track listing.

I didn't know there ever was a double-album configuration. There were tracks added/edited/replaced, etc. but I always thought it was ALWAYS meant to be a single album...am I wrong?
It would be awesome if there was a remastered and expanded 25th anniversary reissue, but I just don't see that happening. https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

I believe 17 Days was meant to be on the album because it was in the original cut of the movie. On the single it even says from the motion picture Purple Rain.
Keep in mind if you add up every song played in the film it would've been a double album for sure. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I had heard something along these lines. That the Original Purple Rain cd was going to be a soundtrack, containing the Revolution stuff, the Times Tracks, Vanity 6, and the score to the movie. Never saw the light of day though. Would make an awesome 25th anniversary special.
Do you know what part of the movie 17 Days was supposed to have been in? "Prince doesn't have verbal diarrhea, he has studio diarrhea...." Allen Leeds

Do you know what part of the movie 17 Days was supposed to have been in? My understanding was that all b sides and unreleased songs like electric intercourse were supposed to be part of the double...similar to 1999. Warnere Bros stepped in and felt it was too much in too little time.

I don't know the exact part of the movie 17 Days was supposed to be in. I do know that if you watch the video for Jungle Love that there is a deleted scene in it with Morris and Apollonia running from around a house. If you blink you'll miss it. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Nope. Just people putting their own traclists together. Purple Rain had songs edited down because of the length of the single album. That's why Computer Blue was cut down because of inclusion of stuff like "When Doves Cry" and "Take Me With U", and why "Father's Song" was cut. The best thing though....put the songs in the order they are in the movie, and add the outtakes or b-sides at the end in order of release, or whatever you like best. PS "17 Days" was just an Apollonia 6 song, but Prince took it back. Not sure if it was due to be in the movie. "Wednesday" was supposed to be at some point, but that's yet to be released. "Take Me With U" was just an Apollonia 6 song as well in the beginning (as was "Manic Monday" and "The Glamorous Life").

There r several ways of look at Purple Rain as being a double album. Originally the album was going 2 be released in standard soundtrack form including recordings from various artists from Dez Dickerson, Prince and The Revolution, Apollonia 6, The Time, and possibly others like Jill Jones. Prince constant writing and recording was the thing that stopped that turning a compilation soundtrack featuring various artists into a Prince and The Revolution album. With several unreleased outtakes, B-sides, and side projects recorded u can put 2gether a 2 different albums of Purple Rain. I know, I've done it and it's still more stuff that still might be in the vault that no one has heard yet.

It wasn't the original double album track list they asked for. Hales: If you have DMSR, the original track list is on there, but I still don't believe it was ever a double album, meaning there was never any sort of early track list for it in that fashion. Ideas might have floated around for a double album, but I've yet to see a tracklist for that. Take Me WIth U, The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Darling Nikki, I Would DIe 4 U, Baby I'm A Star were all edited down to fit a single album, especially once "When Doves Cry" and "Take Me With U" was added. "Father's Song" was removed all together. Go to my earlier reply. It's a good starting point for you. And plus.....just make your own. Why copy someone else? Do your own thang.

There was NO original Double Album version of Purple Rain. This was just another fake rumor that keeps coming back year after year. Prince himself confirmed that this story was false years ago. Purple Rain was ALWAYS intended to be a single album right from the start. Of course, there have been various fan-invented expanded editions of Purple Rain over the years (I know I've made some myself), but that's all they are... fan-inventions. Plus, Prince's last album had been a double (1999), so neither him nor WB had any intention of following up one double album with another.

It's not an offical album. Purple Rain was never intended as a double album. It would have been nice but, then again would it really? He just released a double album back in 1982. Why do it again so soon? Yet, the music was great.

I mixed both endings of Darlin Nikki 2gether. The hidden message is no longer hidden. U can the 'ha ha ha' laughs going in the mix with 'Oh lawd, that's enough... I think u need some'. I also mixed the strings with the original live performace of Purple Rain live at First Avenue. Damn, that was one of coolest things I've hear ever from Prince. He needs 2 release the original version of the track 'Purple Rain'. Here is another version of 2-CD Purple Rain album I did: Let's Go Crazy (Special Dance Mix) / Prince and The Revolution Wednesday (Piano Rehearsal Version from 1983) / Prince Take Me With You (Full/Alternate Version)/ Prince duet with Apollonia Electric Intercourse (Rehearsal Version from 1983) Prince and The Revolution The Beautiful Ones (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince Father Song (Film Version) Computer Blue (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince and The Revolution G-Spot (1983 Version) / Prince Darlin' Nikki (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince Possessed (1983 Recorded Version) When Doves Cry (Album Version) / Prince I Would Die 4 U (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince and The Revolution Baby I'm A Star (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince and The Revolution Purple Rain (Full/Alternate Version) / Prince and The Revolution I mixed Computer Blues ending 2 segues in2 G-Spot. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and for dispelling the rumor I have bought into for years...have to stop telling friends that story now lol!
I dont see Electric Intercourse listed in anyones suggestions. Is my assumption also wrong on this song that it was a demo from the Purple Rain sessions. I know it was performed at the First Avenue charity event when most of the other Purple Rain songs were debuted. My ear also tells me the melody may have evolved into..."If the Kid cant Make you Come" by the Time.

I think I like this one the best as it mixes the B sides and outtakes into the orignal soundtrack and gives it a natural flow.

Oh OK, Hales. U r talking about the last tracklisting that I posted, I think. Electric Intercourse, G-Spot, Wednesday, and Possessed were all at some point intended 4 Purple Rain the movie and soundtrack. They were all pretty much reject due 2 Prince constant writing and recording more music. He felt he had made more songs and at some point felt that they were better than those that I mentioned. G-Spot was intended 4 the film and album but was rejected 4 Darlin Nikki. Electric Intercourse was rejected 4 The Beautiful Ones.

But when he wrote TBO, it was just a stronger song. I still think E.I. should have been a B-side to Take Me With U", instead of using "Baby I'm A Star"

The album should have been released with the songs full verions
Every song outside of When Doves Cry (I believe the only one) were longer even by 2-3 minute (Take Me With You) Most of the album was recorded live with full band outside of When Doves Cry I believe I wish Sheila E could have had some kind of visible role in the movie I wish Jill Jones had an album released during the Purple Reign and Wednesday was in the movie

Yeah, the Wednesday scene was deleted. It was actually part of the scene when Jill gives the kid the tape of music by Lisa and Wendy. It's alot of alternate and deleted scenes that we can talk about 4 days. Where still waiting 2 see these scenes. I think it would have been a better movie.

Who says they know anything about it more than what we've heard? Since it was supposed to be in a movie scene and the Revolution were active participants in the making/recording of most of the music even for proteges I'd say they may know something about Maybe I'll ask Jill Jones at her myspace
