Money Don't Matter 2 Night this is probably my least favorite Prince single ever, and i can't figure out why. i want to say 'it's not what i listen to Prince for', but what does that mean? is it because it's about social/political issues? i loved Sign O' The Times as a single, it didn't even bother me that he wasn't in the video, but for Money Don't Matter, it irritated me.
i can't call Money Don't Matter a bad song, it just seems like a downer. i loved everything else on D&P (except Jughead, naturally). what do you think? am i the only one who doesn't like it? everyone's a fruit & nut case

I don't really dig Diamonds and Pearls much, but this was the first song I heard from it via cassette single...
And compared to the other stuff on that album, it's fantastic. It's midtempo and minimal, it's refreshing how restrained it is next to the rest of the album. It's too long and the lyrics aren't really remarkable, but otherwise, I've always liked this song.

Shows how different we all are, this is one of my all time favorite Prince singles. Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

This is one of the best songs on Diamonds And Pearls in my opinion.

So I was humming this in my head and then it inexplicably turned into "And God Created Woman"... very similar vibe (yet completely different subjects).
It's a great tune, I would say it's also very overlooked (maybe because it follows Jughead). whistle, you may not like it because at the time, we were just given "Gett Off" and "Cream" as singles that rocked all summer, then we got "Money Don't Matter 2Night"... you're right, certainly a downer. The video didn't help matters either. Plus "Call the Law" ranks pretty low on the B-side scale.

the spike lee version of the video could still b played in this day and age
"president mr president where r the jobs mr president? economic recovery? yeah what happend?" man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I really like this song.
I remember back in the day reading in some muso magazine about the chord structure for this song, the journalist suggested there were some Steely Dan influences going on! The only thing that irks me though are the distorted vocals, I know Prince deliberately left them on but I don't think it adds anything to the track.

I never thought of it before (I'm not a musician, so I don't understand chord progressions) but I can totally hear Steely Dan in this song. I love Money Don't matter.., and have always done so,
it has the sweet pop sound of a Beatles song, imo... and it's a political song against poverty, starvation and the 1st war in the gulf - isn't it?..... [Edited 6/4/09 13:39pm] Prince 4Ever.

It's one of the better tracks on the album, and hinted at some of the stuff you were going hear from Prince in the future. (old school sound).
It actually fits better into Musicology than it does D&P, honestly. I never liked D&P, but it does have a few standout songs, and it revived Prince's career at a time it was sagging after his artistically and commercially disastrous Graffiti Bridge episode. (before anyone knocks me, I do like several tracks from Graffiti Bridge )

I see your point about it not being what you listen to Prince for, I feel that way about some tracks, but MDM2N is one of the strongest tracks on D&P and one of his most mature singles IMO.
I love sound of tracks on D&P like this, Strollin' and Willing & Able - makes me wonder why stuff like Jughead and Push are on there - where the hell were tracks like 'Open Book'? That's Prince though right.

i thought this would be an appreciation thread for MDM2N. It NEEDS to be. classic Prince curveball of a single, cats only remember the sexy/funky stuff. gotta let 'em know every once in a while, life ain't always a party. few ppl i know APPRECIATE the political prince, let alone the SPIRITUAL Prince

I think the music captures the feeling of the lyrics perfectly well; the whole throw-away attitude of a gambler who has already lost anyway in a dark night and the whole story.. I start realising that I like it even more than I already thought I would

Something I never thought I'd ever hear him play live. One more card and its 22
Unlucky 4 him again He never had respect 4 money its true Thats why he never wins Thats why he never ever has enough 2 treat his lady right He just pushes her away in a huff And says money dont matter 2 night Money dont matter 2 night It sure didnt matter yesterday Just when u think uve got more than enough Thats when it all up and flies away Thats when u find out that ure better off Makin sure your souls alright Cuz money didnt matter yesterday, And it sure dont matter 2 night Look, heres a cool investment Theyre tellin him he just cant lose So he goes off and tries to find a partner But all he finds are users (users) All he finds are snakes in ever color Every nationality and size Seems like the only thing he can do Is just roll his eyes, and say that... Money dont matter 2 night (dont matter) It sure didnt matter yesterday Just when u think uve got more than enough Thats when it all up and flies away Thats when u find out that ure better off Makin sure your souls alright (souls alright) Cuz money didnt matter yesterday, (dont matter) And it sure dont matter 2 night (ooh-wee-ooh, dont matter) (it dont matter 2 night, no) Hey now, maybe we can find a good reason 2 send a child off 2 war So what if were controllin all the oil, Is it worth a child dying 4? (is it worth it? ) If long life is what we all live 4 Then long life will come 2 pass Anything is better than the picture of the child In a cloud of gas And u think u got it bad... All topped off with a child in a cloud of gas. stop and think about it This is an amazing song with a moral and I will take something like this over the obligatory talk about what's between his broad's legs. Yes, let's appreciate this song! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Funny how tastes differ.
I consider it as on of his strongest singles from the '90's. Not as innovative as his singles from the '80's, its more 'traditional' and kept down to one music-style, but definitely well-written and played. It reminds me a lot of Stevie Wonders music, BTW.
