I'm not sure what exact patch Prince used to create the upright piano sound on this track, but it's some sort of emulator that he ran his guitar through. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I don't know if Prince has ever rocked a Gibson, let alone a Les Paul. They're a pretty heavy guitar. I could see him taking to a lighter SG. I've only seen him use dual humbucker configured guitars in a couple of instances - in the Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad and I Wanna Be Your Lover videos. But who knows if he recorded with these guitars. Maybe. The I Wanna Be Your Lover guitar kinda has a Les Paul shape. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Did you mean "patch" or "pitch" and I guess I look up upright piano and emulator, thanks.

Did you mean "patch" or "pitch" and I guess I look up upright piano and emulator, thanks. Patch. Meaning, it very well could be software added to a digital effects rig. It could also be a stand-alone digital effects processor that has this sound built into it's firmware. I hear "upright piano" when I listen to it, but it's probably called something else. Plus, Prince most likely had other processes going on to get the sound he was looking for. There are all-in-one products that can make your guitar sound like a banjo, ukulele, sitar etc., at the touch of a button. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I wish that I could tell what kind of guitar Prince is using when he records...but I can't...I'd like to understand those differences. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Great fun to play This is the I Wanna Be Your Lover guitar, and after some searching, it is a Gibson, but a Gibson L6S Deluxe. It does have dual humbuckers, is light and has bright Tele/Strat tonal qualities from what I've read. It was the first Gibson to have 24 frets. This is the Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad guitar. Is it an Ibanez? I don't know. But it also features dual humbuckers. Anyone know what this here guitar is? If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It has pedals - sort of? Yes. Prince seems to own the entire Boss pedal catalog. He also uses a Wah-Wah and a Digitech Whammy pedal. There are digital and analog guitar effects pedals, computer plug-ins, rack-mount processors, in-line effects and amplifier effects. The endless combinations can make it very difficult to pinpoint exactly what makes a certain song sound the way it does. You really almost have to have some inside information. Unfortunately, Prince has never spoken in-depth about the technical stuff. Hopefully Takumi, an engineer or someone else from Prince's camp will one day fill us in. Prince's live set-up circa Planet Earth according to http://www.photopix.ch/gu...e&Itemid=2 : Play around with this. Boss virtual pedal board: http://www.bossus.com/go/vpb-2/ Also more interactive pedals: http://www.bossus.com/exp...ive_demos/ This shows what pedals were used on tons of songs: http://www.bossus.com/go/...index.html If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

So, not to start trouble but was Les Paul really the "father" of the electric guitar? Seems I saw a movie once which showed a crude version of a guitar hooked up to a battery or some other electronic gizzmo of some sort?

It's kind of a Henry Ford deal. Ford didn't invent the automobile, but gave it mass appeal. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think George Beauchamp is the inventor of the electric guitar... http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Beauchamp One of the founders of Rickenbacker.

I think George Beauchamp is the inventor of the electric guitar... http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Beauchamp One of the founders of Rickenbacker. Adolph Rickenbacker is most often recognized as the creator of the electric guitar. His was a semi-hollow body design. Years later, Les Paul put pickups on a solid wooden constructed guitar which he would present to Gibson. Les Paul gets credited for invention of the solid-body electric, but that's up for debate. There are earlier patents on similar designs. Interestingly, both a Rickenbacker and a Les Paul are shown being played in the above Prince/Bangles pic. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

But I've heard the name Adolph Rickenbacker before... never heard of George Beauchamp...
