He never did that past 1981 anyway, really. Not all the time. He did have a singlet he wore in 1983 at First Avenue with a trench coat, but he became more clothed w/ a shirt and tie by the time Controversy was touring.

Each is distinctively different. Prince has never rested on his past accomplishments - Around the World in a Day was proof of that over 20 years ago. He could have easily released Purple Rain 2 to exploit a career landmark (MJ did just that with Bad). Prince, like Miles used to, courageously struck out in a different direction despite the fact that he would "lose" a good number of those fake Prince fans that had jumped on the purple bandwagon in 84.

Prince has grown and evolved as an artist and a person. It is fascinating to watch now that he is free to do as he pleases. In many ways, this is truly the most prolific period of the joyride that has been his long career in music.
