Agree totally, like 1999, Purple Rain should have been a double album without a doubt. What were WB thinking?

I think that,if Prince really wanted to make 'Purple Rain' a double album,Warners would have allowed him to.After the amazing success he had with '1999',he had alot of clout and creative control.

Yeah a double album for Purple Rain would have been hot

even back then not knowing the full extend of the music created for the movie
including songs like Possessed and other I knew this was some top quality stuff

hmmmm
would U include songs outside of the 'movie'?

If Electric Intercourse were to be included on Purple Rain it would always be at the expense of The Beautiful Ones & I wouldn't be comfortable with that. lol

It's a damn good song but let's face it The Beautiful Ones is one of his best songs - period.

oi! tough choice but I think I'd leave the beautiful ones on the album probably only because that seems to be the way it should be but I LOVE LOVE LOVE electric intercourse and wish it woulda got some kind of release. I'd love for it to be release NOW but...I'm afriad he'd wreck it somehow.

Leave perfection alone. The Beautiful Ones is exactly where it's supposed to be, though EI should have been released in some form or fashion.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

"Electric Intercourse" should have been the B-side to "I Would Die 4 U" instead of "Baby I'm A Star". Perfect opportunity to get one more song out. I'd love to have heard "Wednesday" as a B-side somewhere too.

Wasn't "Another Lonely Christmas" the B-side to "I Would Die 4 U"? I think "Baby I'm A Star" was the B-side to "Take Me With U".

You're correct. Tough day yesterday (in the E.R. w/ the roommate for eight hours). I was short circuiting when I typed that. But yes..Take me With U was what I was thinking of.

But would you trade Modernaire for Wednesday?

2 different artist Modernaire -Dez Wednesday-Jill Jones

both would have their place
Jill Jones should have had an album for the Purple Rain somewhere between Sheila E & Apollonia 6
meaning she probably would have had 1 or 2 songs in the movie like Apollonia 6 but the rest like Sheila E would have been for the Purple outpour of that year(s) G-Spot and a few others were Purple Rain outtakes

Wouldn't Jill singing Wednesday about "The Kid" have added depth to the movie?
What did playing Modernaire add to the movie, other than establishing there was another band?

Didnt add anything to the film, just another song I really liked biggrin
Agreed, Jill singing Wednesday about the kid would of added depth.

It would have been interesting to see Jill singing "Wednesday" in the film. Her character was under-developed but we could clearly see that she had a crush on The Kid.If the filmmakers had explored this a little more, there might have been a cool sub-plot.

I'm saying both could have there place, Modernaire performance added to the Minneapolis scene and the 'other bands' of the club
It was a short piece as a backdrop to the club scene, the Time couldn't have been on the stage and the Revolution couldn't have been on the stage during that scene

Wednesday would have been placed right before the Take Me With U/God the Love theme

I agree, Watching Purple Rain it moves so quickly
and we already know about the scenes removed
but I think about what it would have added to have that scene with a 'protege' singer singing Wednesday

I also thougth about songs from the Time and even the Glamorous Life that were probably considered for the movie

Noon Rendezvous would have been cool for the bike ride that led to the barn
probably showing Apollonia getting ready 4 her noon time date with the Kid
And the music in the barn scene (which was supposed to be pretty exlicit) would be If the Kid Can't Make U Come

Never heard the studio version, really can't comment on it. The Beautiful Ones is one of the records that made Prince, so I can't imagine replacing it with anything else.

I'm not entirely sure. From what I remember, the bigwig at WB asked prince to give him all the songs he had written. The ones most suitable were chosen for inclusion on the album. I'm not 100% sure on this but i'm sure I read this somewhere years ago. I can imagine that prince made concessions to get his film made.

the other thing about the Beautiful Ones, in association with the movie is that it deals with Prince's turmoil and control issues concerning Apollonia

Electric Intercourse would work in the film but not in that segment, not dramatic enough and it probably could have been place in a deleted scene with the kid and apples

The Beautiful Ones also was written 2 Susannah, she was seeing someone else and Prince wrote this song 2 her to woe her away from the other guy

One thing I like about a lot of the earlier songs, there is so much history involved

Baby, baby, baby - what's it gonna be?
Baby, baby, baby - is it him or is it me?
Don't make me waste my time
Don't make me lose my mind, baby

Baby, baby, baby - can't U stay with me 2night?
Oh baby, baby, baby - don't my kisses please U right?
U were so hard 2 find
The beautiful ones, they hurt U every time

Paint a perfect picture
Bring 2 life a vision in one's mind
The beautiful ones always smash the picture
Always, every time

If I told U, baby, that I was in love with U
Oh baby, baby, baby - if we got married, would that be cool?
U make me so confused
The beautiful ones U always seem 2 lose

Baby, baby, baby
Well, what's it gonna be, baby?

Do U want him or do U want me?
Cuz I want U!
Said I want U!
Tell me, baby, do U want me?
I gotta know, I gotta know
Do U want me?
Baby, baby, baby - listen 2 me!
I may not know where I'm going, baby!
Looka here - I said I may not know what I need!
One thing, one thing's 4 certain, baby
I know what I want, yeah!
And if it please U, baby, please U, baby
I'll beg U down on my knees!
I want U!
Yeah, I want U!
Baby, baby, baby, baby - I want U!
Yes I do!

Beautiful Ones is the most inmportant song in the movie. The whole film hinges on his performance of it. In my opinion its more important in the film than Purple Rain itself.

Electic Intercourse is a totally different direction compared to the Beautiful Ones, where he really doesn't talk about sex but mentions marriage(something that is supposed to really catch a womans attention-obviously in the movie it made Apollonia cry) E.I. is about wanting 2 have sex with someone he doesn't know, animal attraction etc etc

Electric Intercourse
Intended for Purple Rain, this song was taped during the benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre company at First Avenue, August 3rd 1983. It's a simple ballad with an electric piano to the fore. Prince sings of the sexual electricity that exists between him and his lover. No known studio recording is in circulation.

I feel some kind of love 4 U
I don't know your name
This is the kind of love that takes 2
I want U and I'm not ashamed

Cuz baby, U shock my wild
With a sexual electricity extraordinaire
Come and take advantage and undress me
I don't even know U, I don't even care

I feel some kind of sexual courage
Tell me do U feel it 2?
Our bodies wanna be 2gether
Girl, I wanna be with U

Electric is my body, baby
I'll shock U with my lips
Darling, don't U know
Your Technicolor climax is at my fingertips?
Hear me, baby

Electric intercourse, electric intercourse (Wake up, Wendy!)
Don't U wanna?
Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
Don't U wanna make love, sweet love, my love?

Mash it

Electric is my body, baby
I'll shock U with my lips (Yes I will)
Darling, don't U know
Your technicolor climax is at my fingertips
Baby, no no, listen 2 me

Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
Don't U wanna?
(I say this)
Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
(I say the first intercourse, I say the first one)
Don't U wanna make love, sweet love, my love?

Yeah

Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
Don't U wanna?
Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
Don't U wanna make love, my love, sweet love, yeah?

Don't U wanna?
Electric intercourse
Don't U wanna make love, yeah?

interesting idea there, never thought about it like that

Why? Because it really get's the ball rolling with his wanting Apollonia exclusively and also points to his rivalry with Morris?

Yes, it really moves the story along, and it adds alot of emotional depth that you dont get from the slightly wooden acting.

Ramps up the tension and emotion more effectively and faster than any dialogue or extra scene could.

Mostly its the emotion I think is important. Everyone seems a litle too cool before then

Really? Wow.

Although a 2-record set would have been amazing,I think the 9-song album is fine the way it is.It's a tight, focused album.Still,we will always wonder about what could have been.
