I can quite honestly say that aside from when Prince kicks over the microphone stand during his Purple Rain guitar solo at the 1985 AMA,Forever In My from SOTT movie was the only time Prince gave me goosebumps. woot!
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

but you know about prince and the revolution:live

it had a better setlist...and actual live sound

Now see, I think the LIVE VHS has a very tinny and thin sound. I was never satisfied with the bass on that video. Lots of treble, not nearly enough bass.

Totally agree. He was on fire, and at that late in the tour, sometimes performers get tired and in a rut with their performances. Prince was still mixin' it up. It's just the SOUND mix that irritates me a tad. But the showmanship, and all that you mentioned, definitely spot on. SOTT lacks because all the OTHER stuff was cut out and only SOTT songs were used. I LOVED "Girls and Boys" from the SOTT tour. Loved that arrangement. And so many other songs with new staging and a new band...SOTT could have been even better! But I'm glad to have what we do.

I saw this movie at the theatre and I was blown away. This movie is exactly why I insist that Prince should have brought this tour to the States. It's an incredible show and I know it would have been a sellout success everywhere.

Glad to have the movie since the US got screwed on the Parade and SOTT tours. I had to wait until the movie came out on video to see it since it was not showed in any theaters around me. As I recall the video came out the same week the Lovesexy album came out. Very exciting week! lol There doesn't seem to be any concerts floating around from the SOTT tour, so when I stumbled on the New Years Eve 1987 show from Paisley Park I was very happy.

The night the movie opened my friends and myself traveled to Nashville,TN to see the film since it did not show in my hometown.

We saw the movie 3 times that night.

Nashville fans who are old enough to remember the MetroCenter and the multiplex theaters out there .I also saw Grafftti Bridge there on my first date with my wife.

Favorite moments: Sign - U Got The Look and the Cross.

Seeing the movie now and the last scene with Boni and the roses brings a tear to my eye since she is no longer with us. sad

My girlfriend just found this tape in storage last month. I just transferred it to DVD. She wanted to show me her favorite part of the movie which is Forever in My Life. Its a good song but after I watched it i asked her nicely to skip to Hot Thing. That organ intro with the lights is what I always remembered made me keep rewinding and watching. The mix is strange in the beginning of the movie. Snare drum on Sign of the Times is real prominent. I just saw the Sign of the Times outtakes a couple of weeks ago online along with the Lovesexy DVD. Never saw LS in its entirety and I have to say I enjoyed it MUCH more than this concert. There was something sterile about this movie. He was definitely at his peak live during this period though.

Ever notice how quiet Eric Leed's sax solo is during "Hot Thing" ? I hate that. But yeah...the light on the organ....HOTNESS. I just transferred my VHS to DVD the other night, and finally ripped the DVD to the AppleTV (for easy and quick access). It's just good background music as well.

The snare on SOTT might be loud because it was a drum machine, instead of Sheila's drums. Sometimes that Linn live doesn't seems to always translate well. The 1985 LIVE VHS is a good example of that too.

FIND Lovesexy live. And make sure the whole ending of Act I and the "Cross the Line" intro is in Act II's beginning. It was my first and only Prince concert in Los Angeles. LURRVED it.

I saw it in the theater in Philadelphia. I was standing in line and some dude came out and said "PRINCE DIES IN THE END!" haha Most people laughed, because hello....it's a concert! I wish I had went back to see it again and again, but I don't believe I did.

The guitar that leads into Sign O The Times... oh lord. What a fantastic film. Mine's on like 32nd generation VHS; Time to seek out the DVD.

I remember back in the day (89?) plugging my tape recorder into my VCR just so I could listen to it on tape.

My favorite part from SOTT or favorite song is FOREVER IN MY LIFE. I love how it takes a gospel turn and I love how all the band is front and center. Sheila and Cat looked great and Prince was in the zone on that song. He has these moments where it's just him and the music. I love that!!!!

There's also a SOTT warm-up gig at First Avenue. It's pro-shot, but with only one camera and bad lighting, so the vid quality is not great - but the show is. The boot CD called 4 Those Of You On Valium is taken from this video. My wife was at the show. I had to work. mad

I remember the first time I saw this movie and it wowed me. I remember not really liking sign o the times much then due to the production on the cd but after seeing this it made me revisit the album. it is now my favorite prince album / era. I think that my favorite performance from the movie was play in the sunshine. that is still one of my most favorite prince songs because it was so fun.

[Edited 6/2/09 3:19am]

I forgot to add this earlier.
In 1990 my roommate in college at TSU asked me to ride out to the airport to get his cousin who was flying into Nashville. Since it was a girl I was quick to ride out but I almost died when it was the girl who played Vanessa on the Cosby Show. We were all talking on the way back to the dorms and she has on the jacket that Prince has on in the picture. She tells the story of how he found out that she was a big fan of his and he gave her the jacket after a concert in NY.

IT'S GONNA BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT is the best performance in that movie. That's my opinion. The lights the music the style fashion dancing prince on the drums. That song does it for me.
